The popular and gourmet celebration of local produce in the heart of Wissous
A commune in Essonne, part of the Paris-Saclay community, Wissous has managed to preserve the soul of its agricultural and market gardening past. The Fête de la Patate et du Terroir perfectly embodies this attachment to rural roots, celebrating local produce and the agricultural heritage of the territory every autumn.
The event takes over the streets of Wissous town center, particularly Rue de la Division Leclerc, which is transformed into a festive pedestrian zone for the occasion. From 8 am to 6 pm, shopkeepers, associations, and residents mingle in a warm, popular fair atmosphere. Stalls of local produce stand alongside association stands, creating a festive market where all generations of Wissous residents come together.
One of the festival's main attractions is the vintage vehicle exhibition: classic cars and Harley Davidsons line the town center, offering a nostalgic and picturesque spectacle that attracts mechanics enthusiasts from all over the region. These iconic vehicles create a retro ambiance in harmony with the heritage character of the event.
Radio Wissous, a local community radio station, livens up the day with live quizzes from the heart of the festival, asking questions about the town's history and local culture. Participants can win books and prizes by answering correctly, creating a participatory event that strengthens the sense of belonging to the Wissous community.
Wissous is a commune that has long lived from agriculture and market gardening, supplying fruits, vegetables, and cereals to the Paris region. Although urbanization has profoundly transformed the territory since the 1960s, agricultural plots still remain on the plateaus, maintaining the link with this nourishing past. The potato – the famous 'patate' celebrated at the festival – was one of the emblematic vegetables of local agriculture.
The terroir festival is thus an opportunity to raise awareness among new generations about this agricultural heritage, reminding them that behind the housing estates and business parks lies a rich and authentic peasant history. Educational activities, craft demonstrations, and local product presentations contribute to this cultural transmission mission.
The terroir festival is also an opportunity for Wissous associations to present themselves to the public, welcome new members, and showcase their activities. Sports clubs, cultural associations, parent groups, and neighborhood associations mobilize to liven up their respective stands, demonstrating the richness of the local associative fabric. The day ends on a high note, leaving everyone with memories of conviviality and sharing.
