Occitan culture celebrated in the medieval city of Cordes
Every August 14th and 15th, the medieval city of Cordes-sur-Ciel transforms into a major hub for Occitan culture. The Occitan Festival, orchestrated by the group La Talvera, a fervent defender of Occitan heritage, offers two days of immersion in the language, music, and dances of the Occitan region. Conferences, concerts, traditional balls, storytelling performances, wooden games, an Occitan book fair, and a torchlit storytelling walk through the city punctuate these festive and popular days, open to all who wish to discover or rediscover the richness of Occitan tradition.
Every year on August 14th and 15th, the medieval city of Cordes-sur-Ciel becomes the living stage for Occitan culture. Spearheaded by the group La Talvera, an tireless collector and conveyor of Occitan linguistic and musical heritage, this festival is a must-attend event for all lovers of the Occitan language and the traditions of southern France.
For two days, the streets, squares, and monuments of the upper city come alive to the rhythm of Occitan sounds. The program combines traditional music concerts, introductions to Occitan dances, storytelling performances, conferences on the Occitan language and culture, traditional wooden games, and an Occitan book and record fair. Each edition invites a region of Occitania—Creuse, Limousin, Périgord, or Gascogne—to share its traditions, creating a vibrant dialogue between the different Occitan territories.
A magical moment of the festival, the torchlit storytelling walk through the medieval alleys allows for a rediscovery of the built and cultural heritage of Cordes-sur-Ciel through Occitan stories and songs, in an enchanting atmosphere. The closing grand ball, led by the invited groups, brings together festival-goers and locals in a spirit of sharing and conviviality.
The Occitan Festival of Cordes is not just a festive event: it is a militant act for the preservation and transmission of the Occitan language, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Through music, storytelling, dance, and exchanges, it contributes to keeping this ancient language alive in an exceptional heritage setting.
