Traditional and gastronomic festival celebrating the onion in Pontailler-sur-Saône
The Onion Festival is one of the most popular events in Pontailler-sur-Saône, a small town in Côte-d'Or located 40 km northeast of Dijon. Organized every year in July by the Football Club Mirebellois Pontailler Lamarche (FCMPL), this traditional festival has been celebrating a flagship product of the local terroir for over 35 years: the onion. The event attracts nearly 4,000 visitors from all over the region each year.
The Onion Festival program is structured around several highlights. The artisanal market opens its doors at 10 am with local producers and artisans. At 11:30 am, culinary demonstrations are offered by chefs from Côte-d'Or. In the afternoon, the famous onion peeling contest tests competitors under the encouragement of the public. The day continues with concerts and concludes with a free onion soup offered to all visitors.
Beyond its gastronomic roots, the Onion Festival is a true moment of conviviality. The open-air concerts, fireworks, and children's entertainment make it a full day for the whole family. The modest entrance fee (2 euros) makes the event accessible to everyone, confirming its status as an unmissable popular festival on the Côte-d'Or summer calendar.
The Onion Festival returns in July 2026 in Pontailler-sur-Saône for a new edition of this tradition of over 35 years. On the program: artisanal market, onion peeling contest, culinary demonstrations, concerts, and the famous free onion soup.
The Onion Festival takes place in Pontailler-sur-Saône (21270).
