Grand opera in the open air in the courtyard of the Château de Vincennes
Opéra en Plein Air is a nationally renowned traveling festival that offers major opera productions every summer in exceptional historical sites. The Château de Vincennes, a medieval jewel on the outskirts of Paris, is one of its emblematic venues. In the majestic courtyard of the castle, thousands of spectators attend the performance of a legendary opera each year, staged by great names in theater and cinema.
Since 2001, the Opéra en Plein Air festival has offered a unique concept in France: to give as many people as possible the opportunity to discover or rediscover the great masterpieces of the operatic repertoire in exceptional historical sites, under the stars. Each summer, the same work is staged and performed in about ten emblematic locations across France — Les Invalides in Paris, Chambord Abbey, Fontainebleau, the Citadel of Carcassonne — and the Château de Vincennes.
The Château de Vincennes, a 14th-century medieval fortress classified as a historic monument and managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, provides a sumptuous setting for these performances. Its vast inner courtyard, dominated by the keep and the Sainte-Chapelle, offers a natural backdrop that few theater stages can match. Each summer, thousands of spectators settle into the bleachers set up for the occasion and discover a grand opera in this unique atmosphere, blending medieval architecture, starry night, and great music.
Opéra en Plein Air does not just organize open-air concerts: each production is a true original opera production, with staging entrusted to a prominent figure from the world of entertainment, often from cinema or theater. Among the directors who have brought their vision to the festival's productions, we can mention Arielle Dombasle, Robert Carsen, and other renowned artists.
The productions have highlighted the great works of the repertoire: Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's Madame Butterfly, Verdi's Aïda, Puccini's La Bohème, Mozart's The Magic Flute, Bizet's Carmen... These universal titles, chosen for their accessibility and dramatic power, allow both neophyte and seasoned audiences to experience an intense operatic experience.
The performances feature internationally renowned soloists, choirs, and a symphony orchestra, offering musical quality that sacrifices nothing to the demands of the open-air stage. Sophisticated sound and lighting technologies faithfully reproduce the music in spaces that are naturally challenging for acoustics.
The Château de Vincennes has an ideal configuration for open-air performances. The castle courtyard, oriented east-west, allows for the installation of bleachers and the stage that offers every spectator an unobstructed view of the castle's natural setting. The Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes, a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, stands as the backdrop to the stage, creating an extraordinary visual composition for the productions' sets.
Each summer, several performances are scheduled in Vincennes, attracting a large regional audience who sometimes travel from afar to experience this unique opera under the stars at the foot of a medieval castle.
The 2026 edition of Opéra en Plein Air at the Château de Vincennes will feature a new major lyrical production in the courtyard of the medieval Vincennes castle, as part of the festival's national summer tour. The title of the work and the cast will be announced in the spring of 2026.
Opéra en Plein Air will return to the Château de Vincennes in the summer of 2026 for a new lyrical production presented in the courtyard of the keep. As every year, the work will be chosen from the great operatic repertoire and entrusted to the vision of a renowned director.
The full program and cast will be announced in the spring of 2026 on the festival's official website. Ticketing will open at the same time.
