About Opéra sur Écran(s)

Opéra sur Écran(s) is a free lyrical event organized annually by the Opéra de Rennes. Created in 2009, it offers the live or delayed broadcast on a big screen of a major lyrical production. In Rennes, the opera is broadcast outdoors in Place de la Mairie, right in front of the Opera House, transforming the city center into an open-air performance venue for a festive and popular evening open to all.

For its 2026 edition, Opéra sur Écran(s) will broadcast Robinson Crusoé by Jacques Offenbach, live and free on a big screen on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 8 PM, Place de la Mairie in Rennes.

Opéra sur Écran(s) 2026 — Robinson Crusoé

The 2026 edition of Opéra sur Écran(s) features Robinson Crusoé, a three-act opéra-comique by Jacques Offenbach. The Opéra de Rennes production will be broadcast live and free on a big screen on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 8 PM, outdoors at Place de la Mairie, in front of the Opéra.

A production by Laurent Pelly

Directed and costumed by Laurent Pelly, set design by Chantal Thomas, lighting by Michel Le Borgne, and dialogue adaptation by Agathe Mélinand. Musical direction is provided by Guillaume Tourniaire leading the Orchestre National de Bretagne. The performance is sung in French, with French surtitles, lasting approximately 2h30 with an intermission, suitable for ages 8 and up.

Broadcast far beyond Rennes

Beyond Place de la Mairie and Le Tambour (Université Rennes 2), the broadcast is relayed, live or delayed, in about forty communes in Brittany and Pays de la Loire, as well as in Jersey and Guernsey, thanks to the partnership between Opéra de Rennes and Angers Nantes Opéra.

Opera outside the walls, in the open air

In Rennes, the production is projected outdoors on a big screen in Place de la Mairie, in front of the Opera House, as well as at Le Tambour (Université Rennes 2). The initiative has become a true popular celebration: people come for the story, the music, and the conviviality, but also for the pleasure of experiencing a show «together», in the heart of the city. Thanks to a partnership between the Opéra de Rennes and Angers Nantes Opéra, the broadcast is relayed in many communes in Brittany and Pays de la Loire.
