International organ festival in the Most Beautiful Character Town of Vendée
Every summer, the church of Notre-Dame de Vouvant, a Petite Cité de Caractère and Plus Beau Village de France, resonates under the fingers of the greatest international organists. The Orgue & Musique à Vouvant festival offers a season of concerts from May to November centered around the Grand Orgue Fossaert, with a summer highlight every Thursday from July to August. In this exceptional medieval village in the Marais Poitevin, classical music meets heritage for a unique experience in Vendée.
Vouvant is one of Vendée's heritage jewels. This fortified medieval village, labeled Most Beautiful Village in France and Petite Cité de Caractère®, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the meanders of the Mère river, fascinates with the unspoiled beauty of its cobbled streets, ramparts, Mélusine Tower, and Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. It is in this exceptional setting that the Organ & Music in Vouvant festival unfolds each year, one of the most unique musical events in the Pays de la Loire region.
At the heart of the festival stands the remarkable Grand Orgue Fossaert in the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. This exceptional instrument, whose craftsmanship combines tradition and modernity, attracts organists of international renown who make its pipes resonate in the historic Romanesque nave. The unique acoustics of the building, its vaults, and its ancient stones, give the concerts a sonic and spiritual dimension that regulars describe as an unforgettable experience.
The festival makes it a point of honor to invite leading organists from the international scene: titular organists of major European cathedrals, concert performers awarded in prestigious international competitions, recognized educators, and emerging young talents. This ambitious artistic policy allows Vouvant to host musicians whose fame extends far beyond regional borders.
Organ & Music in Vouvant is not just a summer festival: it is a true musical season that runs from May to November, structured around several distinct highlights.
The core of the season is the international organ festival, held every Thursday from July to the end of August, at 7 PM. Eight concerts feature organists from all over Europe and the world. These Thursday evenings have become a ritual for many music lovers in Vendée, who plan their summer schedules around these musical events in the medieval village. Between concerts, Vouvant offers its shaded streets, café terraces, artisan shops, and panoramic views of the Mère valley.
In September, the European Heritage Days provide an opportunity for an exceptional concert combining organ and solo instrument, celebrating both the architectural heritage of the church and the richness of the chamber music repertoire. This concert, usually free of charge, attracts a large audience eager to discover or rediscover the village in a festive atmosphere.
The festival places great emphasis on transmission and education with its “Budding Organists” concerts, featuring students from regional conservatories—notably the Conservatoire de Poitiers and other institutions in the Grand Ouest. These concerts, often held at the beginning of the season or on themed days, showcase emerging talents and anchor the festival in a mission of public cultural service.
At the end of the season, the weekends of the Vouvant Christmas Market (late November) resonate with 15-minute mini-concerts designed for families, who discover or rediscover the organ in a warm and festive atmosphere. These short winter concerts demonstrate the association's commitment to reaching all audiences, including the youngest and those less accustomed to classical music.
The success of the Organ & Music festival is also explained by the irresistible charm of Vouvant itself. The village, nestled in the Mère valley between the forests of Bocage and the green expanses of the Marais Poitevin, is one of the essential stops for any stay in southern Vendée. The Mélusine Tower, the last vestige of the imposing medieval castle, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Vendée countryside. The medieval ramparts, the castle gate, the old stone houses, and the unique evening light make Vouvant a popular filming location and an inexhaustible subject for amateur and professional photographers.
The village is easily accessible from Fontenay-le-Comte, Parthenay, and La Roche-sur-Yon, and is part of a remarkable heritage circuit including Maillezais, Mervent, Nieul-sur-l'Autise, and other Petites Cités de Caractère in Vendée.
The 6th season of Orgue & Musique à Vouvant runs from May to November 2026, with a summer festival offering concerts every Thursday from July to August.
