The awakening to reading for toddlers in Lozère
Premières Pages is a national operation to awaken babies and toddlers (0-3 years) to reading, developed in Lozère by the Departmental Library since 2015. From March to June, nearly a hundred free sessions are offered throughout the department by specialized facilitators: storytelling and music shows, shared readings, sensory workshops, and meetings for families and early childhood professionals. In 2024, more than 2,300 spectators, including 1,550 children, participated in the event.
Premières Pages is a national program supported by the Ministry of Culture, developed in Lozère since 2015 by the Médiathèque Départementale de Lozère with the support of the Departmental Council. Its objective: to raise awareness among families, babies, and toddlers aged 0 to 3 years about the importance of reading and books from the earliest age.
From March to June, four facilitators specialized in young audiences' shows — Magali Allié, Stéphanie Briot, Aloyse Brosse, and Carole Deveaud — travel across Lozère to offer nearly a hundred free sessions in the department's libraries, daycare centers, early childhood support centers, and childminder homes.
The artistic offerings are specifically designed for very young audiences. In 2026, the program will notably include "Balaena" by Stéphanie Briot and "Fantaisie pour petites oreilles" by Aloyse Brosse, shows combining storytelling, music, and object manipulation in a gentle and enveloping atmosphere.
Since its creation in Lozère, Premières Pages has enjoyed growing success. In 2024, the event brought together more than 2,300 spectators, including approximately 1,550 children. These figures reflect the enthusiasm of Lozère families and early childhood professionals for this annual event.
The operation relies on a broad network of partners: the municipal and inter-municipal libraries, the Relais Petite Enfance of Lozère, collective care facilities, and early childhood professionals. This collaboration makes it possible to reach families even in the most rural areas of the department.
By promoting early contact with books, Premières Pages contributes to equal opportunities and cultural democratization in a rural department like Lozère. The program aims to instill the pleasure of reading from early childhood and to support parents in their role as the first mediators of books.
