Poetry, land art and literature in the heart of Tarn-et-Garonne
Each year around March 21st, Montauban celebrates the Printemps des Poètes with public readings, poetry contests, and land art installations in the city's gardens and public spaces. Organized in partnership between the association Confluences and the MéMo media library, this free poetic event invites residents and visitors to reconnect with words along the streets and gardens of Montauban.
Every year in March, Montauban joins the national movement of the Printemps des Poètes by offering a rich and accessible local program. Co-organized by the association Confluences — located at 41 rue de la Comédie in Montauban — and the MéMo media library, this event turns the city into a poetic and artistic playground for several days, around March 21st, the symbolic date of the spring equinox.
The Printemps des Poètes was born from a shared conviction: poetry does not belong only to books and classrooms. It is experienced in the street, in gardens, in public squares, in libraries and cafes. In Montauban, this conviction takes shape through a multidisciplinary program that combines readings, poetry writing contests, land art installations, and encounters with contemporary authors.
One of the unique aspects of the Montauban edition lies in its focus on land art — this art of nature that transforms green spaces and landscapes into ephemeral works. Local and invited artists take over the city's gardens and parks to create poetic in-situ installations, blending natural materials, texts, and sculpted forms directly into the environment.
Public readings are the other pillar of the event. In the gardens of the Musée Ingres-Bourdelle, on the banks of the Tarn, or in the inner courtyards of old Montauban, actors, poets, and amateurs give voice to classic and contemporary texts. These free moments of sharing, open to all, create unusual and warm encounters within the urban fabric.
The poetry contest is an essential part of the Montauban Printemps des Poètes. Open to amateur poets and schoolchildren, it invites everyone to submit their creations in different categories according to age. The winning texts are read in public during a friendly closing ceremony, and some are published in collections distributed at the media library.
The association Confluences, with its strong roots in the literary and cultural life of Tarn-et-Garonne, mobilizes its network of booksellers, writers, and artists from the region for the occasion. The MéMo media library, for its part, offers exhibitions of illustrated poetry, writing workshops for children and adults, and thematic bibliographies on contemporary French-language poetry throughout the festival.
The Printemps des Poètes de Montauban is part of the national movement founded in 1999, while asserting its own identity, strongly linked to the heritage and landscapes of Tarn-et-Garonne. The "pink city," with its ochre bricks, its banks of the Tarn, and its terraced gardens, offers a naturally poetic setting for these spring festivities.
The event is entirely free, in line with the conviction that poetry must remain accessible to all, without financial barriers. The organizing associations benefit from the support of the City of Montauban, the Department of Tarn-et-Garonne, and the Occitanie Region to guarantee this free access and the quality of the events.
The Printemps des Poètes 2026 will again take place around March 21st in Montauban, with a week of free events bringing together outdoor readings, land art installations, writing workshops, and poetry contests. The Confluences association and the MéMo media library are preparing a renewed program to celebrate poetry in all its forms in the city's public spaces.
For its new edition, the Printemps des Poètes returns to Montauban around March 21st, 2026, true to its tradition of offering everyone — without exception and without a ticket — moments of poetry experienced in public spaces.
The association Confluences and the media library MéMo are working on a renewed program that will deepen the links between poetry, visual arts, and land art. Calls for participation will be launched to poets, artists, and schoolchildren from Tarn-et-Garonne in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program will be announced on the Confluences website and at the MéMo media library at the beginning of March 2026.
