Le Retour de la Vapeur: When Pellevoisin Celebrates Agricultural Heritage
Every first weekend of August, the commune of Pellevoisin in the Indre department hosts Le Retour de la Vapeur, an exceptional gathering that brings together vintage machinery enthusiasts, lovers of traditional agriculture, and families around a living rural heritage. Organized by the Syndicat d'Initiative de Pellevoisin, this event has become a must-attend for fans of yesteryear's machines in Boischaut Nord.
A Unique Gathering of Tractors
The heart of the event is the gathering of about sixty old agricultural tractors, dating from 1900 to the present day, exhibited on the football field of the Pellevoisin pond. Each edition highlights a particular brand or theme: American tractors, the John Deere brand, or machines from the first half of the 20th century. Visitors can admire these machines, passionately restored by their owners, and witness demonstrations of their operation.
Traditional Agricultural Demonstrations
Le Retour de la Vapeur also offers demonstrations of traditional threshing, allowing visitors to discover how cereals were threshed in the past using mechanical threshers pulled by steam engines. A plowing competition with old tractors completes the program, offering an impressive display of technical skill. The demonstration of a 1912 Rumely tractor and an American Case steam traction engine, once used to power threshers, binders, balers, or stills, is a highlight of the festival.
Steam Trains and Railway Discoveries
In partnership with the Bas-Berry tourist railway, steam train and railcar rides are offered departing from Écueillé station, connecting the stations of Argy and Écueillé. These trips allow visitors to discover the Berry countryside aboard historic railway equipment, adding an extra dimension to this immersion in mechanical heritage.
Activities and Camaraderie
Le Retour de la Vapeur is a family event that offers numerous activities: a mini-farm for children, a market of regional products, steam still demonstrations, and on-site catering with Berry specialties such as beef with aligot or ham with lentils. The warm and friendly atmosphere makes this weekend a moment of sharing between generations, where the older ones pass on their knowledge to the younger ones.
