Artisans' trail in the ephemeral boutiques of the Cardinal de Richelieu's ideal city
Richelieu en Arts is a summer event organized by the city of Richelieu that showcases art crafts in the unique setting of this 17th-century ideal city. From June to September, about fifteen art artisans—decorative painters, jewelers, costume designers, mosaic artists, upholsterers, textile artists, fashion accessory designers—take over ephemeral boutiques along the Grande Rue. Visitors stroll through this open-air gallery, chat with the artisans, and discover their creations in an exceptional architectural setting designed by Jacques Lemercier for Cardinal de Richelieu.
Richelieu, a city founded in the 17th century by Cardinal de Richelieu and designed by architect Jacques Lemercier, is a unique example of classical urban planning in France. With its grid layout, private mansions, ramparts, and symmetrical Grande Rue, the city offers an architectural setting of rare harmony. It is in this exceptional setting that the Richelieu en Arts event unfolds each summer, transforming the boutiques on the Grande Rue into workshops-galleries for art artisans.
From June to September, about fifteen selected art artisans take over ephemeral boutiques along Richelieu's Grande Rue. The diversity of trades represented offers a rich panorama of contemporary art crafts: decorative painter, jewel creator, costume designer, mosaic artist, upholsterer, felt textile artist, fashion accessory creators, and taxidermist. Each artisan welcomes visitors to their workshop-boutique, demonstrates their techniques, and offers their creations for sale.
Visitors stroll at their own pace along the Grande Rue, moving from one boutique to another in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere. The classical architecture of the tuffeau facades, the harmonious proportions of the street, and the soft light of Touraine create an ideal setting for this open-air gallery. A periodic art craft market complements the setup on certain dates, bringing together a larger number of creators.
Richelieu en Arts is part of an initiative to promote art crafts and revitalize the historic center of Richelieu. The event, supported by the City of Richelieu and cultural stakeholders in the area, helps to showcase excellent artisanal know-how in a heritage setting that adds an extra dimension. Encounters with the artisans allow visitors to understand the gestures, materials, and passion that drive these crafts.
Labeled a Petite Cité de Caractère, Richelieu is worth a visit beyond the craft event. The Musée et Espace Richelieu, the remains of the Cardinal's castle park, the 17th-century market halls, and the various private mansions offer a fascinating dive into the history of this utopian city born from the will of one man, one of France's most powerful ministers.
The 2026 edition of Richelieu en Arts will be held from mid-June to mid-September in the ideal city of Cardinal de Richelieu, with art artisans in ephemeral boutiques along the Grande Rue.
