Black Truffles, the Treasure of Southern Touraine
The Richelieu Truffle Market is held every winter under the magnificent listed market halls of the cardinal's city, in the heart of southern Touraine. The cultivation of black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) in this region dates back to the 18th century, and Touraine is today one of the recognized truffle-growing areas in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
A Market Certified by the French Federation of Truffle Growers
Organized by the Association des Trufficulteurs de Touraine, this market benefits from the label of the Fédération Française des Trufficulteurs (FFT), guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of the products offered. Local truffle growers come to present their harvest of fresh truffles, carefully inspected and graded before sale. Prices vary depending on the season and quality, generally ranging between 800 and 1,300 euros per kilogram.
Quality Producers and Local Flavors
Beyond black truffles, the market hosts local producers offering specialties from the Touraine region: foie gras, Touraine saffron, honey, goat cheeses (including the famous Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine), local appellation wines, truffle-infused oils, and other delicacies. Cooking demonstrations and conservation tips are sometimes offered by the truffle growers themselves.
Richelieu, an Exceptional City for an Exceptional Market
The city of Richelieu, founded in the 17th century by Cardinal Richelieu, offers a remarkable heritage setting for this winter market. The covered market halls, located in the very center of this classified ideal city, provide a perfect setting to welcome producers and visitors in an authentic and friendly atmosphere. The event attracts several hundred visitors from all over the region each year.
A Friendly and Accessible Event
Entry to the market is free, allowing everyone to discover, smell, and taste this exceptional product, the black truffle of Touraine. The market is held in the morning, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering the opportunity to buy directly from producers in a warm and family-friendly atmosphere.
