The Festival de Musique de Richelieu: Music at the Heart of the Cardinal's City
The Festival de Musique de Richelieu is an unmissable summer event for music lovers in southern Touraine. Born from the passion of pianist Nicolas Boyer (Nicolas Boyer-Lehmann), this festival offers a program of classical, baroque, and romantic music each year in the unique architectural setting of Richelieu, a jewel of 17th-century urbanism created by Cardinal de Richelieu.
Richelieu: An Ideal City for Music
The town of Richelieu, classified among the most beautiful 17th-century architectural ensembles in France, offers an exceptional setting for a classical music festival. The Dome of the Richelieu park, a vestige of the Cardinal's lavish gardens, the collegiate church of Faye-la-Vineuse, and the chapels and castles of southern Touraine serve as stages for the concerts, combining the beauty of the locations with quality acoustics.
An Eclectic and Accessible Program
The festival is distinguished by the variety of its programming, which spans several centuries of music:
- Baroque Music: Vivaldi's Four Seasons, works by Bach, Handel, and the masters of the baroque era.
- Classical and Romantic Music: Schubert's trios, Beethoven's sonatas, pieces by Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms.
- Opera and Operetta: Tributes to Offenbach, excerpts from operas in intimate stagings.
- Gospel and World Music: An opening to other musical traditions.
- Piano Recitals: Magnificent evenings dedicated to solo piano.
International Talents and Young Artists
The festival hosts internationally renowned musicians as well as promising young talents, in a spirit of discovery and transmission. The Orchestre des Jeunes du Centre has notably participated in several editions, providing a platform for young instrumentalists from the region.
A Friendly Festival Rooted in its Territory
The Festival de Musique de Richelieu cultivates an atmosphere of friendliness and intimacy that is its charm. The concerts, spread over two weeks between late July and early August, take place in a setting that is both historic and warm. The festival contributes to the cultural and tourist dynamism of southern Touraine and the town of Richelieu, attracting a loyal audience and new visitors each year.
Artistic Direction
Under the artistic direction of Nicolas Boyer-Lehmann, the festival continues its mission of disseminating classical music in an exceptional heritage setting, with the ambition of making great music accessible to all audiences.
