The Salon de Montrouge: Seventy Years Serving Emerging Artists
Founded in 1955, the Salon de Montrouge is one of the oldest and most respected contemporary art events in France. Its originality lies in its constant mission for over seven decades: to identify, support, and reveal the artists of tomorrow. Unlike large commercial fairs, the Salon de Montrouge is a free discovery space, open to all audiences, making Montrouge a recognized cultural hub far beyond its municipal borders.
Each edition opens with a national and international call for applications. Thousands of artists, often recent graduates from fine arts schools, submit their portfolios to the selection committee. Only about forty are chosen after careful review of the formal and conceptual quality of the works, the uniqueness of their approach, and each artist's ability to engage with their time.
The Beffroi de Montrouge: An Exceptional Setting
The salon takes place at the Beffroi de Montrouge, Place Émile Cresp, a 1,500 m² multipurpose space in the heart of the city. Its large, bright hall hosts an ambitious exhibition each year, where works interact within the space according to a scenography designed by the artistic direction. The Beffroi is not the only exhibition venue: works also occupy the city's public spaces, turning the streets and squares of Montrouge into an open-air gallery.
The cultural space Les Jardiniers hosts a complementary exhibition each year dedicated to former participants of the Salon, allowing visitors to follow their artistic careers after their time at Montrouge. This continuity demonstrates the Salon's commitment to its artists beyond the simple exhibition.
A Recognized Springboard in the Art World
Passing through the Salon de Montrouge often marks the beginning of an international career. Many artists who are now recognized have presented their first major works at the Beffroi. The Salon is a true mark of quality for gallerists, cultural institutions, and collectors. Each selected artist receives a fee of 1,000 euros, supported by the Ministry of Culture, in recognition of their presented work.
The program also includes free guided tours for schoolchildren, artistic practice workshops for children and families, and meetings with artists. These cultural mediation activities make the Salon an educational as well as artistic venue, rooted in the local community while radiating nationally.
The 68th Edition (2025): An International Panorama of Emerging Creation
The 68th edition was held from February 7 to 23, 2025, at the Beffroi de Montrouge. Under the artistic direction of Andrea Ponsini, forty artists from ten countries—Belgium, China, South Korea, France, Japan, Madagascar, Panama, El Salvador, Switzerland, and Vietnam—presented a panorama of rare diversity. Painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video mingled in an exhibition that blended critical realities and fantastic explorations, like a kaleidoscope of contemporary identities. Admission was free and open daily from 12 PM to 7 PM, with a late opening on Wednesdays until 9 PM.
The 69th Edition (2026): Forty Perspectives on the World of Tomorrow
The 69th edition will be held from February 13 to March 1, 2026. Forty artists selected from over two thousand applications, originating from fifteen different countries, will take over the Beffroi with works in painting, installation, video, sculpture, drawing, and photography. The selection committee, led by Andrea Ponsini, prioritized the formal and conceptual quality of the proposals, the diversity of mediums, and the artists' ability to address contemporary issues, both societal and artistic. Each exhibited artist receives a fee of 1,000 euros with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
