Nantes (44) On hold

About Scopitone

Created in 2002 by the Songo association (now Stereolux), Scopitone is the international festival of electronic cultures and digital arts in Nantes. Every year in September, for five days, the festival takes over Stereolux, Les Nefs, and numerous venues on the Île de Nantes and in the metropolitan area to offer a transdisciplinary program mixing concerts, performances, DJ sets, digital art installations, immersive exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and professional meetings. Attracting between 25,000 and 50,000 festival-goers per edition, Scopitone champions emergence, diversity, and innovation at the crossroads of music, image, performing arts, and digital technologies. The festival is supported by the Région Pays de la Loire, the Département de Loire-Atlantique, Nantes Métropole, and the Ville de Nantes.

Scopitone: The International Meeting Point for Digital Arts and Electronic Cultures

Since 2002, the Scopitone festival has established itself as one of the major events in France and Europe dedicated to electronic cultures and digital arts. Organized by Stereolux, a contemporary music venue and digital creation hub located on the Île de Nantes, Scopitone takes its name from a hybrid jukebox of the 1960s that broadcast music videos in cafes – a symbol of the fusion of music and image that forms the festival's identity.

A Demanding Transdisciplinary Program

Each year, Scopitone offers a rich and bold program structured around several axes:

  • Electro Nights: Concerts and DJ sets at Stereolux and Les Nefs, highlighting new figures from the national and international electronic scene, from Friday to Saturday, 10 PM to 5 AM.
  • The Collective Exhibition: A major digital art exhibition spread across several venues (Halles 1 and 2, galleries, public spaces), bringing together about fifteen emerging and recognized artists around a theme exploring contemporary technological issues.
  • Public Space Installations: Digital artworks take over the streets and squares of Nantes, with free access.
  • Daytime Concerts and Performances: Musical, choreographic, and multimedia offerings accessible to all audiences.
  • Young Audience Program: Guided tours, digital creation workshops, and family-friendly "Electro Party".
  • Professional Track: Conferences, masterclasses, round tables, and professional meetings for students, researchers, artists, and digital industry professionals.

A Festival Rooted in its Territory

Scopitone unfolds in the Quartier de la Création on the Île de Nantes, centered around Stereolux and Les Nefs, but also extends to other emblematic city locations: Le Lieu Unique, Trempo, Manoir de Procé, Château des ducs de Bretagne, and numerous Nantes bars and cultural spaces. This multi-venue approach makes Scopitone a truly urban festival, transforming the city into a playground for artistic and technological experimentation.

A Commitment to Emergence and Diversity

True to its pioneering spirit, Scopitone highlights artistic emergence and diversity of aesthetics. The festival features both established artists and emerging talents, with a particular focus on gender balance, international representation, and accessibility. The majority of artistic offerings – exhibitions, installations, daytime concerts – are free to access.

Scopitone — edition 2026

ℹ️ 2026 Edition cancelled — Scopitone becomes biennial. There will be no edition of the Scopitone festival in 2026. Following the significant reduction in subsidies from the Région Pays de la Loire to the cultural sector starting in 2025, Stereolux announced that the Nantes festival of digital arts and electronic music could no longer be maintained annually and is now adopting a biennial rhythm. The next edition of Scopitone is expected in 2027. In 2026, a transitional year, Stereolux will nevertheless maintain concerts, exhibitions, and professional meetings outside the festival format.

ℹ️ 2026 Edition cancelled. The Scopitone festival will not take place in 2026. Stereolux has confirmed the festival's transition to a biennial format, with the next edition scheduled for 2027.

Why no Scopitone in 2026?

After twenty-three annual editions, the Nantes festival of electronic cultures and digital arts organized by Stereolux had to cancel its 2026 edition for budgetary reasons. The Stereolux team explained that the Région Pays de la Loire has cut almost all of its subsidies to the cultural sector starting in 2025. After maintaining the 2025 edition despite this withdrawal, the association determined that it was no longer sustainable to organize the festival annually and chose a biennial frequency starting in 2027.

A transitional year in 2026

Even without the festival, Stereolux announces that it will maintain a program focused on digital cultures in 2026: concerts, exhibitions, professional meetings, and occasional events within its premises on the Île de Nantes. To learn about this program, consult the agenda on the official Stereolux website.

See you in 2027

The next full edition of Scopitone — with its Electro Nights, its collective digital art exhibition, its public space installations, and its professional component — is expected in 2027. Dates and programming will be announced later on the official website.
