The Soirées Lyriques de Sanxay: opera in the heart of Antiquity
Created in 2000 by artistic director Christophe Blugeon, the Soirées Lyriques de Sanxay have established themselves as the third largest open-air opera event in France, after the Aix-en-Provence Festival and the Chorégies d'Orange. Every summer, in August, the Gallo-Roman theatre of Sanxay comes back to life for three performances of a major opera from the repertoire, attracting nearly 10,000 spectators per edition.
An exceptional ancient setting
Classified as a historic monument and managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay is one of the largest monumental complexes in Roman Gaul. Its theatre, which could accommodate up to 6,600 spectators in antiquity, offers remarkable natural acoustics, ideal for projecting lyrical voices without amplification. The alliance between ancient heritage and lyrical art gives the performances a unique spectacular dimension.
International-level productions
Each year, the Soirées Lyriques presents a new production featuring a symphony orchestra, a choir, and internationally renowned soloists. From Rigoletto to Aïda, from Carmen to Nabucco, the festival explores the great works of the lyrical repertoire with staging designed specifically for this exceptional setting. Musical direction is entrusted to renowned conductors, and costumes, sets, and lighting are designed to enhance the ancient theatre under the starry sky of Poitou.
A popular and committed festival
Supported by an association of nearly 250 volunteers, the festival champions an accessible vision of lyrical art, with prices starting at 23 euros. The Soirées Lyriques de Sanxay contribute to the cultural influence of the Vienne region and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, while promoting remarkable archaeological heritage. Shuttles from Poitiers, free parking, and on-site catering facilitate access to this extraordinary event.
