The Strawberry Fair: forty years of gourmet tradition in Val de Garonne

Each year, on the second weekend of May, the village of Sainte-Bazeille in Lot-et-Garonne transforms into a vast popular festival dedicated to strawberries, flowers, and wine. Since its creation in 1984, the Strawberry, Flower and Wine Fair has become one of the unmissable events in the Val de Garonne, attracting over 20,000 visitors over two days.

A tribute to Lot-et-Garonne strawberries

It was on the initiative of Mayor Fernand Lagaüzère that the idea was born to promote local strawberry production in Sainte-Bazeille. Lot-et-Garonne is one of the leading strawberry producing departments in France, with renowned varieties such as Cléry, with its intense flavor, and Lycia, with its generous size. The harvest mobilizes dozens of seasonal workers every year from mid-April.

The Strawberry Trophy

On Sunday morning, the Strawberry Trophy kicks off the sporting festivities at the sports ground with:

• A walking tour starting at 9:00 AM
• Running races from 9:45 AM for all levels

The giant tart parade

The highlight of the fair, the giant strawberry tart parade winds through the village streets in the early afternoon, followed by a tasting offered to all visitors. This gourmet and friendly spectacle symbolizes the generous spirit of the event.

A rich program over two days

Saturday

Saturday is marked by:

• An international rugby tournament bringing together hundreds of children aged 6 to 12 with prestigious teams like Stade Toulousain
• The opening of the Regional Model Making Exhibition and the exhibition of giant LEGO creations in the town hall
• A friendly meal in the castle park in the evening (steak and fries) followed by an open-air concert

Sunday

Sunday hosts the heart of the fair with:

• The official inauguration at 10:30 AM and the aperitif offered by the municipality at 11:30 AM in the castle park
• The gourmet village offering tastings of strawberries, local wines, and regional specialties
• The craft fair under the market hall with demonstrations of know-how
• A flea market animating the village streets
• The funfair for young and old
• A live concert in the late afternoon

Flowers, wine, and terroir

Beyond strawberries, the fair highlights flowers and plants with horticultural exhibitors, as well as Val de Garonne wines offered for tasting. This strawberry-flower-wine trio reflects the agricultural richness of this territory located between Marmande and La Réole, along the Garonne river.
