When the Château de Valençay transforms into a Venetian palace
The Venice Carnival Weekend at the Château de Valençay is a festive and elegant event that transports visitors to the enchanting atmosphere of the Venetian carnival. For a spring weekend, 120 people in sumptuous Venetian costumes stroll through the castle's salons, staircases, and gardens, offering a fascinating visual spectacle. A grand procession is organized daily at 3 PM. On Saturday, the park remains open until 9 PM to extend the magic. Included in the castle entrance fee.
The Venice Carnival Weekend is one of the most enchanting events of the cultural season at the Château de Valençay. For a spring weekend, this magnificent Loire Valley château, formerly owned by Prince de Talleyrand, transforms into a little Venice of the Indre. The event blends the splendor of the château's Renaissance and classical architecture with the grace and mystery of Venetian costumes, creating a unique atmosphere in the heart of Berry.
The main attraction of the weekend is the presence of 120 people in finely crafted Venetian costumes, who wander freely throughout the château and its gardens all day long. These costumed participants, coming from all over France and sometimes Europe, wear sumptuous outfits—crinoline dresses, embroidered capes, tricorn hats, and porcelain masks—that rival each other in elegance and refinement. Visitors can photograph them at leisure against the exceptional backdrops of the château: monumental staircases, state rooms, French formal gardens, and landscaped park.
The highlight of each day is the grand procession at 3 PM, during which all the costumed participants gather for a majestic procession through the château and its gardens. This parade offers a striking spectacle, blending the beauty of the costumes with the grandeur of the architectural setting. On Saturday evening, the château's park remains exceptionally open until 9 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the Venetian atmosphere in the golden light of dusk, a particularly magical experience.
The Château de Valençay, a listed Historic Monument, is one of the most beautiful châteaux in the Loire Valley. Built from the 16th century onwards, it was the residence of Prince Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Napoleon's famous diplomat, renowned for his lavish receptions. The Venice Carnival Weekend perpetuates this tradition of elegance and festivities by opening the château to a spectacular event that attracts enthusiasts of Venetian culture and heritage lovers every year.
For photography enthusiasts, the Venice Carnival Weekend is a paradise. The combination of richly adorned period costumes, mysterious Venetian masks, and the château's remarkable architecture offers exceptional shooting opportunities. The French formal gardens, the park's perspectives, and the sumptuous interiors serve as backdrops that enhance the costumes and create living tableaux of striking beauty.
