When the Château de Valençay transforms into a Venetian palace
The Venice Carnival Weekend at the Château de Valençay is a festive and elegant event that transports visitors into the enchanting atmosphere of the Venetian carnival. For a spring weekend, around 90 enthusiasts in sumptuous Venetian costumes, coming from all over France and Belgium, stroll through the castle's salons, staircases, and gardens, offering a fascinating visual spectacle. A grand procession is organized every day at 3 PM. On Saturday, the park remains open until 8 PM to extend the magic. Access to the event is included in the castle's usual entrance fee.
The Venice Carnival Weekend is one of the most enchanting events of the cultural season at Château de Valençay. For a spring weekend, this magnificent Loire Valley castle, former property of Prince de Talleyrand, transforms into a small Venice of the Indre. The event blends the splendor of the castle's Renaissance and classical architecture with the grace and mystery of Venetian costumes, creating a unique atmosphere in the heart of Berry.
The main attraction of the weekend lies in the presence of approximately 90 enthusiasts in exquisitely fine Venetian costumes, coming from all over France and sometimes Belgium, who freely wander through the castle and its gardens throughout the day. These costumed participants wear sumptuous outfits — crinoline dresses, embroidered capes, tricorn hats, and porcelain masks — that rival each other in elegance and refinement. Visitors can photograph them at leisure in the exceptional settings of the castle: monumental staircases, state rooms, French gardens, and landscaped park.
The highlight of each day is the grand procession at 3 PM, during which all the costumed participants gather for a majestic parade through the castle and its gardens. This parade offers a striking spectacle, blending the beauty of the costumes with the grandeur of the architectural setting. On Saturday evening, the castle park remains exceptionally open until 8 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the Venetian atmosphere in the golden light of dusk, a particularly magical experience. In case of rain, the parade takes place inside the castle.
Château de Valençay, classified as a Historic Monument, is one of the most beautiful castles in the Loire Valley. Built from the 16th century, it was the residence of Prince Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, a famous diplomat of Napoleon, renowned for his lavish receptions. The Venice Carnival Weekend perpetuates this tradition of elegance and festivities by opening the castle to a spectacular event that annually attracts enthusiasts of Venetian culture and heritage lovers.
For photography enthusiasts, the Venice Carnival Weekend is a paradise. The combination of richly adorned period costumes, mysterious Venetian masks, and the remarkable architecture of the castle offers exceptional photo opportunities. The French gardens, the park's perspectives, and the sumptuous interiors provide numerous backdrops that enhance the costumes and create vivid, strikingly beautiful scenes.
