The largest Viking festival in France
Every year in July, the fortified town of Rocroi, in the Ardennes, is invaded by Vikings. The Viking Festival of Rocroi, named The Battle of Rocroi, is the largest Viking festival in France, bringing together over 350 combatants from all over Europe: France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Scandinavia. Co-organized by the town of Rocroi and the associations Les Adorateurs de Byggvir and Fenrìs Ùlfar - Les Loups de Fenrir, this exceptional event transforms the Place d'Armes into a real battlefield and a life-size Viking camp.
Epic battles and warrior tournaments
The heart of the Viking Festival is the battles. Two armies of 200 warriors in historical attire, armed with shields, axes, and swords, clash for three days to determine which side will reign supreme on the battlefield. Numerous competitions are organized for the combatants: bridge battles, regicide tournament, duels, glíma (Viking wrestling), and archery tournaments. Spectators are close to the action, impressed by the power and precision of the combatants who adhere to the historical reenactment rules of the 9th to 11th centuries.
Medieval market, encampments, and crafts
Beyond the fights, the Viking Festival offers a true immersion into the daily life of the Vikings. A medieval market hosts artisans showcasing their creations inspired by the Viking era: silver jewelry, leather goods, decorative weapons, clothing, pottery, and wooden utensils. The historical encampments are continuously animated by the participating troupes, demonstrating forging, weaving, cooking, and navigation techniques of the Viking era. A competition for the best historical costume reenactment and a cooked dish competition reward the most authentic participants.
Dancing evening, axe throwing, and activities for all
The Viking Festival of Rocroi is also a moment of conviviality and festivity. On Saturday evening, a grand dancing evening livens up the Place d'Armes, bringing together combatants and visitors in a festive atmosphere. Axe throwing and archery workshops are open to the public. Conferences, such as one on Viking navigation by the Vikingar crew, enrich the cultural dimension of the event. Food and drinks are available on-site throughout the festival. Admission is free, making it an event accessible to all audiences.
