The Wazemmes Carnival: A Popular and Participatory Celebration
The Wazemmes Carnival is much more than just a costume parade: it's a true neighborhood festival, rooted in the identity of Wazemmes, one of Lille's most vibrant and cosmopolitan districts. Driven by neighborhood associations, schools, and residents, the carnival celebrates diversity, creativity, and living together through a festive and free event.
The Grand Parade
The highlight of the day is the grand parade, which kicks off at 4 PM through the neighborhood streets. Hundreds of participants—families, children, groups of friends, associations, schools—parade in costumes made during pre-event creative workshops. The parade is accompanied by brass bands, floats, and the mythical Cheval Blanc (White Horse), an emblematic figure of the Wazemmes carnival.
Creative Workshops and Preparation
In the lead-up to the carnival, workshops for making hats, masks, and costumes are offered free of charge to residents. These participatory workshops allow everyone to prepare their outfit and contribute to the event's collective creativity. On the day itself, a makeup and photo booth area welcomes participants from 3 PM.
Costume Contest
At 6 PM, a costume contest rewards the most original, creative, and spectacular costumes. Registration can be done on-site or by email with the neighborhood town hall. Prizes are offered by event partners, including lille3000.
Carnival in Concerts
From 6 PM onwards, the carnival continues with "Carnaval en concerts" (Carnival in Concerts), in partnership with the Wazemmes l'Accordéon festival. About fifteen concerts in 15 bars in the neighborhood offer an eclectic program: musette, rock, chanson, world music. The celebration continues until 11:30 PM in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
