Woippy's iconic popular festival since 1930
The Woippy Strawberry Festival has celebrated the town's emblematic fruit for a month between late May and late June since 1930. The program includes: concerts, election of the Strawberry Queen, a night parade with giant floats, a best dessert contest, a funfair, and fireworks. A popular, intergenerational event in Moselle.
The Woippy Strawberry Festival is an institution. Since 1930, this popular festival has celebrated annually the red fruit that made this town in the northern suburbs of Metz famous. Strawberry cultivation in Woippy dates back centuries and has profoundly shaped the town's identity. With over 95 editions, the Strawberry Festival is one of the oldest festive events in Moselle, spanning decades without losing its soul or popularity.
The Strawberry Festival unfolds over nearly a month, from late May to late June, with a rich and varied program that animates the entire town. Each weekend brings its share of events, from neighborhood parties to major shows, in an atmosphere of popular jubilation that brings together all generations.
One of the traditional highlights of the festival is the election of the Strawberry Queen, a festive and convivial moment where a young Woippy resident is crowned to represent the town and its emblematic strawberry throughout the year. The best strawberry dessert contest accompanies this election, pitting the pastry-making talents of the residents against each other.
The highlight of the festival is the spectacular night parade that winds through the streets of Woippy in the early evening. Illuminated giant floats, including the famous Graoully (the legendary dragon of Metz), parade accompanied by brass bands, dance groups, and costumed marchers. This colorful parade attracts thousands of spectators along the route and concludes with an open-air concert on Place Jean Perrin.
The Strawberry Village, set up on Place Debs, offers a gourmet and artisanal space with stands selling local products, crafts, and a guinguette atmosphere with concerts and musical entertainment. Visitors can taste strawberries in all their forms: fresh, in jam, in pastries, in cocktails, and many other creative preparations.
The Strawberry Festival concludes with a grand concert followed by spectacular fireworks launched from Woippy Plage, offering a dazzling finale to a month of festivities. This festive moment brings the entire community together to beautifully close this annual celebration of the Woippy strawberry.
The Strawberry Festival is not just a festive event: it is a living reflection of Woippy's identity. It testifies to the town's attachment to its agricultural heritage and popular traditions, while knowing how to renew itself to attract new generations. A funfair, dance evenings, tea dances, and neighborhood events complete a program that emphasizes conviviality and living together.
