The intimate herring festival in the picturesque fishing village of Yport
Every November, the picturesque fishing village of Yport celebrates herring with a friendly and authentic festival. In the festival hall and the town hall courtyard, locals serve a traditional meal of grilled herring with potatoes, accompanied by sailors' songs. This human-scale festival, organized with the help of the APPF, offers an intimate and warm maritime experience in one of the most beautiful villages on the Alabaster Coast.
Yport is one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the Alabaster Coast, nestled in a narrow valley between chalk cliffs, a few kilometers southwest of Fécamp. This small fishing port, which inspired Impressionist painters and the writer Guy de Maupassant, has retained its authentic character with its brick and flint houses, its small boats pulled up on the pebble beach, and its winding alleys leading to the sea.
Like all the ports on the Alabaster Coast, Yport has lived for centuries to the rhythm of herring fishing. Every autumn, the village fishermen went to sea for the herring season, and the women prepared, salted, and smoked the fish on the shore. Herring was the main source of income for this community of fisher-farmers, and the traditions associated with its fishing and preparation have remained vivid in the village's memory.
The Yport Herring Festival is distinguished by its intimate and friendly character. In the festival hall and the town hall courtyard, the organizers offer a traditional meal including a kir with cider as an aperitif, a starter, grilled herring with potatoes, cheese, dessert, and a glass of cider. This complete menu, served at a modest price, allows for an authentic gastronomic experience in a warm, village atmosphere.
The meal is accompanied by sailors' songs performed by local groups, filling the festival hall with the rhythm of traditional shanties. The APPF (Association des Pêcheurs Plaisanciers de Fécamp) contributes to the organization, offering demonstrations of nautical knots, educational panels on maritime heritage, and a fishing simulator. This heritage dimension enriches the festival with a cultural depth that goes beyond simple tasting.
In a context where the small fishing ports of the Alabaster Coast are seeking to maintain their maritime identity, the Yport Herring Festival is an act of cultural resistance as much as a festive celebration. It testifies to the attachment of the people of Yport to their maritime heritage and their desire to pass on to future generations the memory of this "king fish" that has sustained their village for centuries.
