À Portée de Rue: When Classical Music Leaves the Halls for the Street

Since 2006, the À Portée de Rue festival has embodied a simple and strong conviction: classical music belongs to everyone. By taking concerts out of traditional venues — into paved courtyards, episcopal gardens, church steps, and the alleys of the old town — the City of Castres offers a unique, free event every summer, open to all audiences.

A Musical Journey Through Historic Castres

The festival unfolds in several highlights throughout the day, inviting the public to stroll from stage to stage through the historic center of Castres. This musical walk is one of the festival's hallmarks: musicians guide spectators on foot, through the city's architectural heritage, from the theater to the Town Hall, passing by the Notre-Dame de la Platé church and the Bishop's Garden.

The venues themselves constitute a journey through Castres' history: the courtyard of the Town Hall traditionally hosts the grand final concert, while the Goya Museum and the Bishop's Garden, a green setting on the banks of the Agout, offer exceptional backdrops for intimate performances.

20th Edition in 2025: An Exceptional Anniversary

The 2025 edition marked the festival's 20th anniversary, celebrated with an exceptional program from July 15 to 18, 2025. For this historic moment, the City of Castres brought together leading artists:

  • Antoine Fauré and Clément Brunet (trumpets) — Musical walk through Castres' heritage
  • Nicolas Bourdoncle (piano) — Chopin program on the steps of Notre-Dame de la Platé
  • Jean Ferrandis (flute) and Emmanuel Rossfelder (guitar) — Intimate duo in the Bishop's Garden
  • Quatuor Almaviva — Cello quartets
  • Le Consort, conducted by Théotime Langlois de Swarte — Grand Vivaldi concert in the Town Hall courtyard
  • Choir of the Opéra National du Capitole — Grand finale

A Festival Rooted in Local Life

À Portée de Rue is more than just a music festival: it is a civic and popular event that brings together several thousand residents and visitors each year in a spirit of conviviality. Admission is free to all concerts, without reservation, in line with the festival's founding philosophy: to make great classical music accessible to all Castres residents and visitors.

The festival benefits from the support of the Castres City Hall and is part of a rich summer cultural program that makes Castres, the prefecture of the Tarn, a vibrant and artistically radiant city.

Castres, City of Culture and Heritage

Castres is a human-sized city, crossed by the Agout river, whose historic center holds many architectural treasures: the Town Hall, a former Benedictine abbey, the Goya Museum — one of the most important museums dedicated to Spanish painting outside of Spain —, the Saint-Benoît Cathedral, and the French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. These exceptional places form the natural setting for the festival, bringing them to life in a unique way with each edition.
