Classical music in freedom in the streets of Castres
Created in 2006 by the City of Castres, the À Portée de Rue festival celebrates classical music differently: outdoors, in courtyards, on church steps, and in the gardens of the historic heart of the city. Free concerts and musical walks transform Castres into an open-air stage every summer, offering everyone the chance to experience great music in a festive and popular atmosphere.
Since 2006, the À Portée de Rue festival has embodied a simple and strong conviction: classical music belongs to everyone. By taking concerts out of traditional venues — into paved courtyards, episcopal gardens, church steps, and the alleys of the old town — the City of Castres offers a unique, free event every summer, open to all audiences.
The festival unfolds in several highlights throughout the day, inviting the public to stroll from stage to stage through the historic center of Castres. This musical walk is one of the festival's hallmarks: musicians guide spectators on foot, through the city's architectural heritage, from the theater to the Town Hall, passing by the Notre-Dame de la Platé church and the Bishop's Garden.
The venues themselves constitute a journey through Castres' history: the courtyard of the Town Hall traditionally hosts the grand final concert, while the Goya Museum and the Bishop's Garden, a green setting on the banks of the Agout, offer exceptional backdrops for intimate performances.
The 2025 edition marked the festival's 20th anniversary, celebrated with an exceptional program from July 15 to 18, 2025. For this historic moment, the City of Castres brought together leading artists:
À Portée de Rue is more than just a music festival: it is a civic and popular event that brings together several thousand residents and visitors each year in a spirit of conviviality. Admission is free to all concerts, without reservation, in line with the festival's founding philosophy: to make great classical music accessible to all Castres residents and visitors.
The festival benefits from the support of the Castres City Hall and is part of a rich summer cultural program that makes Castres, the prefecture of the Tarn, a vibrant and artistically radiant city.
Castres is a human-sized city, crossed by the Agout river, whose historic center holds many architectural treasures: the Town Hall, a former Benedictine abbey, the Goya Museum — one of the most important museums dedicated to Spanish painting outside of Spain —, the Saint-Benoît Cathedral, and the French formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. These exceptional places form the natural setting for the festival, bringing them to life in a unique way with each edition.
The 21st edition of the À Portée de Rue festival will take place in mid-July 2026 in Castres, continuing the tradition of free outdoor classical concerts in the emblematic locations of the historic center: Town Hall courtyard, Bishop's Garden, Notre-Dame de la Platé church steps, and Goya Museum. Musical walks and evening concerts, free admission.
Building on the success of its 20th anniversary, the À Portée de Rue festival returns in July 2026 for a new edition of classical music in freedom in Castres. True to its philosophy of accessibility and free admission, the festival will once again take over the most beautiful spaces of the historic center: the Town Hall courtyard, the Bishop's Garden, the steps of Notre-Dame de la Platé, and the halls of the Goya Museum.
The 2026 program will be announced in the spring by the City of Castres. As every year, the edition promises beautiful artistic surprises, encounters between renowned musicians and the local public, and the incomparable magic of outdoor concerts under the Castres stars. Free admission to all concerts, no reservation required.
