Musical journey to the heart of Romanesque Burgundy
Every July, the town of Tournus and its surroundings resonate with the sound of ancient instruments during the Baroque Week. Organized by the association Évasions Musicales en Bourgogne Romane, a collective of musicians, teachers, and performers of early music, this festival combines artistic excellence and musical transmission in an exceptional heritage setting.
Baroque Week stands out for its hybrid format, halfway between a concert festival and a musical practice workshop. For a week, amateur and professional musicians gather to work together on the Baroque and Renaissance repertoire under the guidance of renowned masters. Renaissance and Baroque dance master-classes complete the program, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the artistic universe of these eras.
The concerts of Baroque Week take place in the Romanesque churches of the Mâconnais-Tournugeois, architectural jewels of the 11th and 12th centuries offering ideal natural acoustics for early music. The Abbatiale Saint-Philibert de Tournus, a masterpiece of Romanesque art with its barrel vaults and massive pillars, is the main setting for these musical moments.
Each edition is organized around a theme that guides the programming of concerts and workshops. The great musical capitals of Baroque Europe—Venice, Dresden, London, Rome—inspire the programs in turn, inviting the public on a musical journey through centuries and borders. The musical serenades offered by the participants at the end of the day create spontaneous moments of sharing in the streets of Tournus.
Baroque Week in Tournus aims to be a local festival, where the public can interact with musicians and discover early music in a relaxed atmosphere. Affordable prices and free concerts during the serenades help to widely open this musical world to the general public.
The Baroque Week in Tournus returns from July 13 to 18, 2026, for a new edition of the early music workshop organized by Évasions Musicales en Bourgogne Romane. The 2026 theme, "Europe in the Spanish Hour", offers a journey with exotic flavors, blending dances and music tinged with Iberian and colonial influences from the Golden Age. Concerts, a danced conference, a flamenco evening, serenades, and a final concert punctuate the week, all free or with voluntary contribution, at the Chapelle des Soldats (Hôtel-Dieu / Musée Greuze).
From July 13 to 18, 2026, the Tournus early music workshop invites you on a journey with exotic flavors: dances and music tinged with the sunny influences of Golden Age travels and the bubbling curiosity of a Europe rich in mixtures.
The choir's repertoire explores the treasures of baroque music, where Europe and South America meet: from the Versailles splendor of Lully's "Ballet des Nations" to the refined elegance of Campra's "L'Europe Galante", passing through the Iberian and colonial influences that crossed the oceans.
The workshop takes place at the École de musique de Tournus (Palais de Justice, place du Général de Gaulle). The 2026 teaching team brings together Vincent de Meester (choir), Frédéric Dufoix (lute, theorbo), Carla Fabris (baroque and Renaissance dance), Marie Fraschina (singing and interpretation), Isabelle Lubrano-Lavadéra (viola da gamba), Frédéric Martin (baroque and Renaissance violin), Virginie Pillot (harpsichord, continuo), Élodie Virot (traverso) and Émilie Volle (recorder, baroque oboe).
All public events (excluding the cinema evening) take place at the Chapelle des Soldats (Hôtel-Dieu / Musée Greuze) and are free or with voluntary contribution.
