A Carnival Listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Carnaval de Monsempron-Libos is one of the most remarkable festive traditions in Lot-et-Garonne. Recognized and listed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in France by the Ministry of Culture, it bears witness to the richness of carnival practices in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This popular carnival, revived about twenty years ago by local educators and teachers, has managed to rediscover its traditional roots while adapting to contemporary practices.
The Course of the Festival
The Carnaval de Monsempron-Libos unfolds in several key moments that punctuate the festive afternoon:
Preparation and Makeup
The day begins at the Parc du Foulon, where young and old gather in the primary school rooms, on the town hall square, to prepare. Makeup workshops are offered, and the sale of confetti allows everyone to arm themselves for the parade. Participants compete in creativity with their costumes, mixing traditional and contemporary outfits.
The Grand Parade
The carnival procession then sets off for a street parade animated by musical groups: batucadas, sambas, and brass bands. The parade follows a recurring and emblematic route, descending and turning from the top of Monsempron to Libos counter-clockwise, passing in front of the town hall. Floats, made from recycled materials, highlight the regional identity and local economic activities, such as the famous forge float.
The Trial and Cremation of Monsieur Carnaval
The highlight of the festival, Monsieur Carnaval is paraded on a float throughout the procession. Upon arrival, he is solemnly judged and then burned, perpetuating the ancestral ritual of burning the carnival effigy, a symbol of the end of winter and the renewal of spring.
The Festive Banquet
After the cremation, a banquet is organized in the town hall, offering traditional rich carnival cuisine. This moment of conviviality and sharing brings residents together around a festive meal. A snack is also offered to all participating children by the organizing association.
A Heritage Passed Down to New Generations
The transmission of carnival knowledge and rituals is central to the organization of the carnival. For children, it happens through workshops organized from November onwards as part of the leisure center and schools. For adults, it is through rehearsal and immersion within local associations and school theater groups that traditions are perpetuated. The carnival occasionally hosts delegations from other regional carnivals, thus strengthening its traditional character and cultural exchanges.
