A Bicentennial Tradition in Haute-Marne
The Carnaval de Wassy is one of the oldest carnivals in the Grand Est region. With over 200 years of history, it perpetuates every spring a festive tradition deeply rooted in the identity of this small Champagne town located in the Blaise valley, in the heart of the Haute-Marne department. Supported by the association Carnaval Les Fluteaux de Wassy, this popular event mobilizes hundreds of volunteers throughout the year to prepare floats, costumes, and entertainment.
The Grand Parade: Floats, Music, and Confetti
The highlight of the day is the grand parade that winds through the streets of Wassy's town center. About fifteen entirely handmade floats created by volunteer carnival-goers are paraded, pulled by hand in the purest tradition. Each group chooses a theme and designs its float and costumes accordingly, competing in creativity and ingenuity. Spectators, gathered along the route, are showered with confetti and lulled by the rhythms of several musical groups accompanying the procession throughout the parade.
Traditional Characters
The Carnaval de Wassy is distinguished by the presence of emblematic characters from local carnival folklore. The "quêteus", mischievous collectors, and the "soufflaculs", colorful figures inherited from ancient French popular traditions, liven up the procession and interact with the public, adding a touch of humor and conviviality to the festival. At the center of the parade sits King Carnival, a majestic figure who presides over the festivities before his final destiny.
The Burning of King Carnival
As tradition dictates, the day concludes with the solemn burning of King Carnival in Wassy's central square. This spectacular ceremony, where the royal mannequin goes up in flames before the eyes of the crowd, symbolizes the end of the festivities and the renewal of spring. It is a moment that is both joyful and moving, closing this day of celebration in a warm atmosphere.
A Unifying Event
With nearly 1,000 costumed carnival-goers and up to 10,000 spectators, the Carnaval de Wassy is the biggest festive event in Haute-Marne. It attracts visitors from all over the department and beyond, contributing to the radiance of Wassy and its region. The event is completely free and open to all, in a spirit of sharing and conviviality that has characterized this popular festival for two centuries.
Entertainment and Festivities
Beyond the parade, the day offers a rich program of entertainment. Festivities begin in the early afternoon with street entertainment preceding the start of the procession. Food and drink stands allow spectators to refresh themselves throughout the afternoon. The day continues into the evening with a concert that extends the party in a musical and dancing atmosphere, offering a memorable finale to this great carnival day.
A Living Heritage
The Carnaval de Wassy embodies a living intangible heritage of Haute-Marne. Passed down from generation to generation, this tradition unites the entire local community around values of solidarity, creativity, and joie de vivre. The months of preparation leading up to the carnival are as important as the event itself: in workshops, volunteers build the floats, sew the costumes, and imagine the themes, thus perpetuating unique artisanal know-how and an irreplaceable social bond.
