A Centenary Carnival
The Carnaval Étudiant de Caen has its origins at the end of the 19th century. The first edition took place in 1894 under the name "cavalcade de bienfaisance", initiated by the General Association of Students of Caen (AGEC). The parade was held during Mi-Carême (Mid-Lent) and was called "cavalcade de la Mi-Carême". This student tradition continued until 1963, when it was interrupted.
The Revival of 1996
In 1996, the carnival was relaunched on the initiative of performing arts students from the University of Caen-Normandie. The first edition of the revival brought together 3,000 to 4,000 students. Since then, the carnival has continued to grow to become the biggest student carnival in Europe, attracting over 35,000 revelers each year.
A Spectacular Parade through the Streets of Caen
The procession of floats and costumed revelers starts from the Esplanade de la Paix (Campus 1 of the University) and heads to the Parc des Expositions along a 2.5 km route passing through the most emblematic places in the city. Gathering starts at 2 PM, the parade departs at 3 PM, and the party continues at the Parc des Expositions with a large NRJ Extravadance concert organized by the City of Caen and NRJ until late in the evening.
A Unifying Event for the City
The Carnaval Étudiant de Caen is more than just a parade: it is a unifying event that brings together students, residents, and visitors in a festive atmosphere. In 2024, 31,000 people participated in the celebration. In 2025, the carnival was part of the celebrations for the Millennium of Caen, with a special theme. The carnival is also a driver of student associative life, involving many associations in the preparation of floats and costumes.
