About Chahuts

The Chahuts Festival is the unmissable event for spoken word arts in Bordeaux. Created in 1991, it offers a rich program each June, blending storytelling, theater, dance, poetry, performance, and music in the city's streets and cultural venues. With a majority of free shows, Chahuts celebrates artistic daring and audience encounters.

Chahuts, the spoken word arts festival

The Chahuts Festival was born in 1991 in Bordeaux with the mission to celebrate spoken word arts in all their forms. Supported by the eponymous association located on rue Permentade in the Saint-Michel district, this festival offers a rich and eclectic program each June at the crossroads of storytelling, theater, dance, poetry, and performance.

A rich and accessible program

Each edition brings together about forty artistic events spread over a week. The vast majority of shows are free and outdoors, taking over the streets, squares, and gardens of the Saint-Michel and La Benauge districts. Indoor shows complement the program with more intimate forms.

A festival rooted in its neighborhood

Chahuts maintains a strong connection with the residents of the Saint-Michel district, the festival's historic location. Talks, workshops, and convivial moments are an integral part of the event, fostering encounters between artists and the public. The festival also extends to other districts of Bordeaux to reach an ever-wider audience.

Concerts and night parties

Beyond the shows, Chahuts offers concerts and festive evenings that extend the artistic experience late into the night. These moments of free and joyful celebration have become a signature of the festival.

Chahuts 2026 — « Our Attachments »

For its 35th edition, the Chahuts Festival returns to Bordeaux from Friday, June 5 to Saturday, June 13, 2026. For nine days, the performing arts and public space arts take over the Saint-Michel and La Benauge neighborhoods with a rich program of over 50 artistic events.

The Theme: « Our Attachments »

This edition explores what connects us and keeps us standing: our loved ones, our territories, our commitments, our angers, our impulses. In a world marked by crises and divisions, Chahuts chooses to return to the essential — what we have in common, what brings us together despite our differences, what sometimes breaks and needs to be repaired, what is threatened with disappearance and what we wish to defend.

52 Artistic Events, 35 Free

The program brings together intimate and political narratives, breathtaking performances, sound pieces, radio shows, no-frills poetry, surprises, but also large artistic communal meals, participatory workshops, collages, exhibitions, and talks. Theater, storytelling, poetry, rap, dance, and music coexist in over twenty locations: quai des sports, square Dom Bedos, marché des Douves, parc Pinçon, and many other spots in South Bordeaux.
