The organ in the spotlight in Chartres Cathedral since 1975
The Chartres International Organ Festival is a prestigious music festival held every summer in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chartres Cathedral. Created in 1975 by the Association des Grandes Orgues de Chartres (AGOC), it features Sunday concerts and summer evening performances showcasing the great Danion-Gonzalez organ in the exceptional acoustics of the cathedral. Over 350 organists from around the world have performed since the first edition, making this event an international benchmark for organ music.
Since 1975, the Chartres International Organ Festival has resonated through the vaults of Chartres Cathedral with the greatest organ music performers. Created by the Association des Grandes Orgues de Chartres (AGOC), founded in 1969 by Pierre Firmin-Didot, the festival aims to introduce organ music to the general public and showcase the magnificent Danion-Gonzalez organ, rebuilt in 1971.
Chartres Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, offers an unparalleled architectural and acoustic setting for organ concerts. The cathedral's grand organ, a large-scale instrument by Danion-Gonzalez, is one of the most remarkable in France. Its rich sound and the unique resonance of the Gothic nave create an unforgettable musical experience.
The festival unfolds each summer in two parts: the International Festival Sunday Concerts, on Sundays at 4:30 PM, and the Summer Evenings, on Thursdays at 9 PM. Over 350 organists from around the world have performed since 1975, including great masters of the instrument, winners of international competitions, and promising young talents.
The program explores all organ repertoires, from Baroque to contemporary, including Romantic and French music. Works by Bach, Messiaen, Franck, Widor, Vierne, and living composers are featured throughout the summer.
The Association des Grandes Orgues de Chartres (AGOC), recognized as being of public utility and under the high patronage of the President of the Republic since 1977, also organizes an International Organ Competition that helps discover tomorrow's talents. The association works to maintain and promote Chartres' organ heritage and to train new audiences.
The 52nd Chartres International Organ Festival will be held in the summer of 2026 at Chartres Cathedral. The program will be announced in the spring.
