The 31st edition of Cinespaña, the festival of Spanish and Portuguese cinema, takes place from October 2nd to 11th, 2026, in Toulouse, with additional screenings scheduled throughout October in partner cinemas across Occitanie. This year, the festival will award a double Violette d'Honneur, the first of which goes to director Jonás Trueba.

Cinespaña 2026 — 31st Edition

Cinespaña returns to Toulouse from October 2nd to 11th, 2026, for its 31st edition. For ten days, the Occitan capital will celebrate Iberian cinema with screenings at several iconic city venues (Cinéma ABC, Pathé Wilson, American Cosmograph, ENSAV, Cinémathèque de Toulouse, Le Cratère, La Forêt électrique, Médiathèque José Cabanis, Instituto Cervantes). Screenings across the Occitanie region will continue throughout the month of October in partner cinemas.

A double Violette d'Honneur, including Jonás Trueba

For 2026, the festival has announced a double Violette d'Honneur, awarded to two figures of Spanish cinema from different generations. The first honor goes to Madrid-born director Jonás Trueba, a long-time friend of Cinespaña (winner of the Violette d'Or in 2013 for Los ilusos and in 2016 for La reconquista), who gained recognition in France with The August Virgin and is the subject of a 2026 retrospective at the Centre Pompidou. The name of the second recipient had not yet been revealed as of mid-August 2026.

Program

As every year, the festival features several sections: official feature film competition, documentary competition, a panorama of the year's best productions, short films, animation, thematic cycles, retrospectives, Q&As with film crews, masterclasses, and literary events. The detailed program will be announced on the official website cinespagnol.com closer to the festival dates.

The Festival Village

The festival "village," the daily meeting place for attendees, will be set up as in previous years in the courtyard of the ENSAV/Crous, at 56-58 rue du Taur, featuring a parallel program of meetings, debates, dining, and live music.

Cinespaña, a showcase for Iberian cinema in Toulouse

Since 1996, the Cinespaña festival has been the major Toulouse event dedicated to Spanish and Portuguese cinema. Organized annually in October by the AFICH association (Association du Festival International du Cinéma Hispanique), it has established itself as one of the main platforms in France for the promotion of contemporary Iberian cinematographic creation.

A comprehensive panorama of Iberian cinema

For about ten days, the festival presents dozens of films divided into several sections: official feature film competition, documentary competition, short films, animation, panorama of the year's best productions, thematic cycles, and retrospectives. Cinespaña is also a meeting place: film crews, actors, directors, and producers come to Toulouse to meet the public during screenings followed by debates, masterclasses, round tables, and literary encounters.

A festival rooted in the city and the region

While Toulouse is the heart of the festival, screenings radiate throughout October in many partner venues across Occitania. In Toulouse, screenings take place in several emblematic independent and institutional cinemas: Cinéma ABC, Pathé Wilson, American Cosmograph, ENSAV (École nationale supérieure d'audiovisuel), Cinémathèque de Toulouse, Le Cratère, La Forêt électrique, Médiathèque José Cabanis, Instituto Cervantes. The festival's "village," located in the courtyard of ENSAV/Crous (56-58 rue du Taur), serves as a friendly gathering point for festival-goers.

Over thirty years of existence

In 2025, Cinespaña celebrated its 30th edition. The 2026 edition will therefore mark the festival's 31st year, which has continuously grown in strength and annually honors prominent figures in Hispanic cinema with the "Violette d'Honneur." The festival works closely with the Instituto Cervantes de Toulouse, the Crous Toulouse-Occitanie, the Mairie de Toulouse, and numerous institutional and cultural partners.
