International festival of classical, traditional, and new music in Metz
Classic Metz'ival is a free festival of classical, traditional, and new music in Metz. For two weeks in July, it offers a dozen concerts in various heritage sites across the Eurometropolis, featuring international artists for a vibrant and open vision of classical music accessible to all.
Classic Metz'ival was born from an ambition: to make classical music accessible to everyone. Since 2017, this summer festival has offered a program that breaks down barriers between learned and popular music, between classical repertoire and contemporary creation. By offering free concerts in various locations within the Metz Eurometropolis, the festival democratizes access to quality music and reaches a large and diverse audience.
The strength of Classic Metz'ival lies in its audacious programming that fosters dialogue between repertoires and genres. Major works of Western classical music are presented alongside world traditional music, contemporary creations, and cross-disciplinary artistic projects. Each edition hosts leading international artists, such as Spanish organist Loreto Aramendi or American composer Edgar Girtain, whose work blends European traditions with music from the Americas.
Each year, the festival hosts an artist in residence whose work is highlighted throughout the two weeks of the festival. This residency allows for the creation of original works, offers encounters and workshops with the public, and fosters lasting connections between artists and the Metz region.
Classic Metz'ival concerts take place in heritage and unique venues across the Eurometropolis: churches, chapels, historic halls, gardens, and urban spaces. The Metz Cathedral, the Saint-Maximin Church, the Arsenal, and other emblematic sites in Metz become open-air concert halls or venues under centuries-old vaults. This dialogue between music and architecture enhances the audience's sensory experience.
Classic Metz'ival extends beyond the city of Metz to encompass the entire Eurometropolis. Concerts are scheduled in Montigny-lès-Metz, Longeville-lès-Metz, Mey, and other municipalities, contributing to cultural decentralization and the animation of peri-urban areas. This metropolitan dimension makes the festival a unifying event that brings together residents from the entire agglomeration.
All Classic Metz'ival concerts are offered with free admission. This strong choice reflects the festival's commitment to cultural accessibility and the democratization of classical music. Supported by the Metz Eurometropolis, the City of Metz, and institutional partners, the festival manages to maintain a high-level program while ensuring free access for the public.
