The traditional festival of Parentis-en-Born, between bullrings, bandas and Gascon conviviality
The Feria Sen Bertomiu is the traditional festival of Parentis-en-Born, celebrated every year in August in this town in the Born region of Landes. For five days, the town lives to the rhythm of the bandas, the float parades, the novilladas in the covered arena Roland Portalier, the Landes races, the concerts and the entertainment for the whole family. This popular festival, which takes its name from Saint Bartholomew (Sen Bertomiu in Gascon), is the unmissable event of the Parentis summer, blending Gascon taurine traditions, musical festivities and Landes conviviality.
The Feria Sen Bertomiu is the great traditional festival of Parentis-en-Born, a town in the north of Landes nestled on the edge of its lake. Every year in August, the town celebrates its feria for five days of intense festivities mixing taurine traditions, music, gastronomy and Gascon conviviality.
The name Sen Bertomiu is the Gascon form of Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint historically celebrated in the Born region of Landes. The feria perpetuates a centuries-old tradition of patron saint festivals that punctuate the life of Gascon towns during the summer, with a program mixing the sacred and the profane, tradition and modernity.
The covered arena Roland Portalier is the beating heart of the feria. It hosts the taurine highlights: novilladas (bullfights with young bulls), Landes races with dodgers and jumpers, cockade competitions and capéas (taurine school open to the public). Two novilladas are traditionally scheduled for the weekend, attracting aficionados from all over the region.
Outside the arena, the feria takes over the streets of the town with parades of decorated floats, concerts by bandas that make the town center vibrate with their brass and percussion, sevillian dances and popular balls that go on late into the night. The Banda Lous Pegaillouns, a local group, traditionally opens the festivities.
The feria dedicates a special day to children with adapted entertainment: games, shows, sports and cultural activities allowing the youngest to fully experience the spirit of the festival. This family day demonstrates the desire to pass on festive traditions to new generations.
Gastronomy plays a central role in the feria: a giant omelette prepared in the arena on Saturday lunchtime, a traditional Landes tripe meal, bodegas offering tapas and local specialties, and a Landes day celebrating the terroir and culinary traditions of the department.
The Feria Sen Bertomiu takes place every year in August, over five days from Friday to Tuesday. The exact dates vary slightly depending on the edition.
The festivities take place in the streets of the town center of Parentis-en-Born and in the covered arena Roland Portalier.
Access to street festivities, banda concerts, float parades and popular balls is free. The novilladas and Landes races in the arena are subject to a charge. Prices are communicated before each edition on the town's website.
Parentis-en-Born is located on the edge of its lake, accessible from the A63 motorway (Liposthey exit) then the D43. Parking is available on the outskirts of the town center. During the feria, the town center is closed to traffic.
Parentis-en-Born has campsites, hotels and seasonal rentals. It is recommended to book well in advance, as the feria attracts a large number of visitors.
A security system is in place throughout the feria. Water and first aid stations are set up along the festival route.
