The Festival de l'Oh !: Water as an Artistic and Civic Playground
The Festival de l'Oh ! is an original initiative by the Département du Val-de-Marne, a territory crossed by over 60 kilometers of waterways—the Seine, the Marne, and the Bièvre. Created in the 2000s, this festival was conceived as a tool for reclaiming the riverbanks and reconciling residents with their rivers, which had been too long relegated behind expressways and industrial zones.
The festival's principle is simple and poetic: for a weekend, the banks of the Seine or the Marne transform into an open-air stage. Artists from all disciplines—street theater, dance, circus, music, visual arts—take over the riverbanks, locks, barges, and bodies of water to offer free or pay-what-you-can performances, accessible to all audiences.
A Festival Between Art and Environment
The Festival de l'Oh ! is inseparable from its environmental commitment. Each edition offers, alongside performances, awareness workshops on water quality, the biodiversity of aquatic environments, and the climate challenges related to urban rivers. Biologists, nature educators, and environmental associations are present for educational activities for families and schoolchildren.
Commented cruises on the Seine or Marne allow for the discovery of the natural and industrial heritage of the riverbanks from the water. Hikes and guided walks along the banks complete the offering, making the festival an invitation to a sensitive and informed exploration of the Val-de-Marne aquatic territory.
An Alternating Geography
The Festival de l'Oh ! has the particularity of moving from one bank to another depending on the edition. Historically, it alternated between the banks of the Seine in even years and the banks of the Marne in odd years, thus creating progressive coverage of the entire riverbank length of the department. Each edition creates temporary stops along the waterways, transforming everyday places into ephemeral stages.
The 2026 edition, planned for the banks of the Seine in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, will offer two days of festivities with cruises, performances, a dance, urban walks, artist studio visits, and activities for children.
A Model of Popular and Free Festival
The Festival de l'Oh ! embodies a vision of public cultural service: a completely free festival, accessible to all, in open public spaces. This freeness is not anecdotal: it is the foundation of a cultural democratization policy that relies on the chance encounter between a resident and an unexpected artistic performance by their river.
The festival also reveals the ongoing transformations in Parisians' relationship with their rivers. Since its creation, the banks of the Seine and Marne in Val-de-Marne have undergone numerous redevelopment operations, and the festival has accompanied, sometimes preceded, these dynamics of reclaiming riverside spaces.
