Sorgues celebrates the richness of French and Francophone song at the Pôle culturel
Every spring, Sorgues, a town of 20,000 inhabitants in the Vaucluse, hosts its Festival de la Chanson Française et Francophone. Organized at the Pôle culturel, this festive and popular event pays tribute to the diversity of French-language song, from French classics to new voices from Belgium, Quebec, French-speaking Africa, and the West Indies. The 11th edition, held from April 7 to 18, 2025, on the theme 'The Faces of Volunteering', brought together several hundred spectators around the love of song and the French language.
In the cultural landscape of the Vaucluse, the Festival de la Chanson Française et Francophone de Sorgues holds a unique place. It is not a festival of great national renown, nor a spectacular gathering of headliners: it is something more precious – a popular celebration, rooted in the life of a town of 20,000 inhabitants, driven by passionate associations and volunteers, in service of French-language song in all its diversity.
Since its creation, the festival has built a strong identity around a dual commitment: to promote classic and contemporary French song – from Brassens to Brel, from Barbara to Grand Corps Malade – and to open up to Francophone song from around the world, whether it comes from Belgium, Quebec, Switzerland, the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa, or the West Indies. This openness makes it a faithful reflection of the diversity and vitality of the French language on all continents.
The 11th edition of the festival, held from April 7 to 18, 2025, was themed around volunteering, with a unifying theme: 'The Faces of Volunteering'. An affectionate nod to those who, year after year, dedicate their time and energy to keeping associative culture alive, in Provence and elsewhere.
The program was built around concerts, shows, and activities that explore the many facets of French-language song. The Pôle culturel de Sorgues – a modern cultural center housing the performance hall, the Jean Tortel media library, and various artistic spaces – served as the main venue for the performances, offering artists a quality technical setting and the public a comfortable space.
The strength of the Festival de la Chanson de Sorgues lies in its deep roots in the town's associative life. It is often local associations, music schools, choirs, and amateur groups that form the core of the program, alongside professional artists invited as headliners. This mix is precious: it guarantees both artistic quality and popular accessibility.
The spring concerts accompanying the festival (April 7-9, 2025) are an opportunity for local musical groups to perform in front of their audience, creating moments of shared emotion between amateur musicians and loyal spectators. Students from the École de Musique et Danse de Sorgues often participate in these concerts, offering parents and residents the pleasure of seeing the town's young talents progress.
Sorgues is a town with a distinct personality in the Vaucluse region. An industrial town with a long working-class tradition, it is also rich in remarkable architectural heritage – its Baroque church of Saint-Pierre (16th-17th centuries) is one of the most beautiful in Provence – and a vibrant cultural life supported by its Pôle culturel, its media library, and its dense network of associations.
Located 10 km from Avignon on the left bank of the Rhône, Sorgues benefits from a strategic geographical position, making it a crossroads town between the Gard and Vaucluse departments, between the city and the Provençal countryside. The song festival is part of this identity of a popular and open town, which claims the right to culture for all, far from tourist routes and elite cultural institutions.
The Jean Tortel Media Library in Sorgues – named after the great Sorgues poet (1907-1993), one of the masters of 20th-century French poetry – is an active partner of the festival. Throughout the spring, it organizes activities related to French song: exhibitions on iconic singer-songwriters, writing workshops, thematic bibliographical selections, and intimate concerts. Jean Tortel, whose poetic work is closely linked to the French language and its musical resources, is a natural tutelary reference for this festival dedicated to the beauty of sung words.
The 12th edition of the Festival de la Chanson Française et Francophone de Sorgues will return in April 2026 at the town's Pôle culturel. Concerts, shows, and activities centered around French-language song, featuring French and Francophone performers from around the world.
The 12th edition of the Festival de la Chanson Française et Francophone de Sorgues will be presented in April 2026 at the town's Pôle culturel. True to its mission of celebrating the richness and diversity of French-language song, the festival will once again bring together professional artists and local groups in the performance hall of the Pôle culturel.
