Street theater and historical performance in the medieval alleys of Joyeuse in Ardèche
The Festival de la Joye takes place every summer in the village of Joyeuse, a historic town in southern Ardèche. Once the capital of the Duchy of Joyeuse, the village preserves remarkable medieval heritage: the 16th-century Château des Ducs de Joyeuse, the Tour de la Recluse, the remains of ramparts and the gates of Sainte-Anne and Jalès, as well as the Saint-Pierre church, a former ducal chapel. It is in this authentic setting that the festival comes alive, transforming the cobbled alleys into a living stage.
The program of the Festival de la Joye revolves around street theater and historical performances. For a week at the beginning of August, the village hosts theater troupes that take over the squares, courtyards, and vaulted passageways to offer performances blending local history and contemporary creation. The highlight of the festival is the grand costumed parade, a procession bringing together about a hundred extras in period costumes who walk through the village streets, reviving the splendor of the Duchy of Joyeuse.
Beyond street theater, the Festival de la Joye offers a multidisciplinary program including concerts, exhibitions, craft workshops, and activities for all ages. Music accompanies the street performances, while local artisans showcase their skills within the medieval village setting. The festival is driven by a popular and participatory spirit, inviting residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the living history of Joyeuse.
In addition to the festival, the Espace Historique et Légendaire (Historical and Legendary Space) of Joyeuse allows visitors to discover the prestigious past of the town throughout the summer, through a museum and theatrical tours in the old town. These guided tours feature historical figures from the duchy, offering an immersive and fun experience that extends the spirit of the Festival de la Joye beyond the programmed days.
Located in the Beaume Valley, at the crossroads of the Ardèche Cévennes, Joyeuse is a charming village that attracts many visitors each year. The Festival de la Joye contributes to the cultural influence of the municipality and all of southern Ardèche, by offering a festive and cultural event rooted in the historical identity of the territory. Access to most of the activities is free, in line with the organizers' desire to make culture accessible to all.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Joyeuse, 07260 Joyeuse, Ardèche.
