The 19th edition of the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival takes place from Monday, August 24th to Saturday, August 29th, 2026. Franck Dubosc presides over the jury, Cambodia is the guest country, and actress Nathalie Baye is honored with a retrospective of eleven films. Ten Francophone feature films compete for the Valois awards, starting with the opening film "Ni vue, ni connue" by Marc Fitoussi and closing with "Dix pour cent, le film" by Émilie Noblet. A 10-entry pass is available for €25, and two outdoor screenings are free with reservation.

The 19th Angoulême Francophone Film Festival

From Monday, August 24th to Saturday, August 29th, 2026, Angoulême hosts the 19th edition of its Francophone Film Festival: six days of screenings spread across the CGR cinema, Espace Franquin, the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, the Éperon theater, Le Nil, the Théâtre d'Angoulême, and Espace Carat, along with outdoor screenings and city-wide events.

A competition of ten Francophone films

Ten Francophone feature films are in the running for the Valois awards, presented at the closing ceremony. The jury is chaired by actor, director, and screenwriter Franck Dubosc, joined by Marie-Christine Barrault, Marine Delplace, Julien de Saint Jean, Charlotte Lipinska, Déborah Lukumuena, Rose-Marie Perreault, Jean-Paul Salomé, and Antoine Wauters. Sara Mortensen chairs the Francophone student jury.

Cambodia, guest of honor

Cambodia is the featured country, with nine films including four by Rithy Panh: "Les Gens de la rizière", "Un barrage contre le Pacifique", "Un soir après la guerre", and "Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot". The selection also includes "Diamond Island" by Davy Chou, "White Building" by Kavich Neang, and "La Joie de vivre" by Norodom Sihanouk. A debate at the courthouse, "Cambodia: From Genocide to Democratic Construction," complements this focus on Friday, August 28th.

Tribute to Nathalie Baye

Following her passing on April 17th, 2026, the actress—a former festival jury president and a loyal friend of Angoulême—is celebrated with a retrospective of eleven feature films chosen by Dominique Besnehard, including "Un week-end sur deux" by Nicole Garcia, "Une liaison pornographique" by Frédéric Fonteyne, "La Californie" by Jacques Fieschi, and "Garçon chiffon" by Nicolas Maury. A photography exhibition featuring works by Carole Bellaïche, Tony Frank, and Luc Roux is open to the public at Espace Franquin until August 29th, and the square in front of the CGR cinema will be inaugurated as Place Nathalie-Baye on August 20th, 2026.

Meetings, masterclasses, and outdoor screenings

The festival offers numerous free or pass-accessible events: masterclasses at Espace Franquin (Iribe room), a conversation with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Cécile de France at the Cosmopolite bookstore, a roundtable on "The Cultural Exception: A French Invention?" at Le Nil, a presentation of "Lumière!" by Thierry Frémaux at the theater, and a family mega-screening at Espace Carat. Two outdoor screenings are free with reservation: "Catch Me If You Can" by Steven Spielberg on Tuesday, August 25th at Place Francis Louvel, and "Le Visiteur du futur" by François Descraques on Thursday, August 27th at Place de Bourgines, featuring a "cine-bike" setup where ten volunteers pedal in turns to power the projection.

French-language cinema in the spotlight

The Festival du Film Francophone d'Angoulême (FFA) was created in 2008 by producers Marie-France Brière, Dominique Besnehard, and Patrick Mardikian. Dedicated to French-language cinema, the festival is held annually during the last week of August in Angoulême and has established itself as a major event for the cinematic fall season. From its very first edition, the FFA has showcased around thirty films, including many world premieres, attracting 20,000 spectators.

Preview screenings and competition

Each year, the FFA offers a selection of about ten films in competition and thirty films in preview across various categories. The Valois, awarded during the closing ceremony, recognize the best films, actors, and actresses in the selection. The festival also honors the cinema of a French-speaking country with a thematic focus that changes each year.

Meetings and masterclasses

Beyond the screenings, the FFA offers masterclasses with renowned directors and actors, professional meetings, debates, and moments of conviviality. The festival is distinguished by an atmosphere that is both prestigious and accessible, allowing the public to mingle with artists in the streets of Angoulême and in the screening rooms throughout the city.

Angoulême, land of cinema

The choice of Angoulême as the host city is no coincidence: Charente is a dynamic region for the film industry, with the Magelis hub dedicated to image and its proximity to filming studios. The FFA contributes to the cultural influence of the city and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, attracting an ever-growing audience of film lovers and professionals each year.
