International Harmonica Festival in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher — event on hold since 2017

Saint-Aignan — Loir-et-Cher (41) Since 2003

About Harmonicas sur Cher

The International Harmonicas sur Cher Festival was a unique biennial event in France, entirely dedicated to the harmonica, held in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher (Loir-et-Cher) from 2003 to 2017. For eleven editions, every two years on Ascension weekend, the Ligurian town transformed into the world capital of this instrument with infinite expressive possibilities, welcoming harmonica players from around the world for concerts, masterclasses, jam sessions, and meetings with manufacturers — from blues to classical, jazz to Celtic music.

The festival has not been renewed after its 11th edition in May 2017. Some of the creators (Julien Cormier, Christophe Minier) have since launched a new harmonica festival, "De l'Hers dans les anches", in Calmont (Haute-Garonne).

ℹ️ Festival currently on hold. The 11th edition of the International Harmonicas sur Cher Festival took place from May 25 to 27, 2017, in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher. Since then, no new edition has been organized, and no official source confirms a resumption for 2026. Some of the founders have moved on to a new harmonica festival in Calmont (31), "De l'Hers dans les anches", the first edition of which was held in May 2023.

Harmonicas sur Cher: A Global Harmonica Event in Val de Cher (2003-2017)

The International Harmonicas sur Cher Festival was a unique musical event, entirely dedicated to the harmonica and its artistic diversity. Founded in 2003 by the Harmonicas sur Cher association, led by Christophe Minier, this biennial festival established itself for about fifteen years as one of the essential international events for enthusiasts of this instrument, attracting musicians and spectators from all over Europe and beyond.

A Festival in the Heart of Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher

The festival took over the emblematic venues of Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher, a small town of character nestled in the Cher valley, at the gates of Sologne and the Zoo de Beauval. Concerts took place at the Salle des Fêtes, in the magnificent 11th-century Romanesque Collegiate Church, at the Prévôté, and in the town's streets and cafes. This dispersion of stages throughout the urban fabric created a friendly and festive atmosphere where music resonated on every street corner.

An International and Eclectic Program

Each edition brought together internationally renowned harmonica players alongside emerging talents and passionate amateurs. The program covered a rich musical spectrum: blues, jazz, classical, Celtic music, folk, world music, contemporary music, rock, French chanson, and many other genres. Evening concerts, true highlights of the festival, alternated with masterclasses led by instrument virtuosos, spontaneous jam sessions in cafes, and meetings with harmonica manufacturers who came to present their latest creations. Among the artists who marked the last editions were notably Jean-Jacques Milteau, Philippe Ménard, Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin, Ben Toury Corp, L'Ironie du son, and the duo Roll Pignault & Mathieu Pesquet.

An Instrument with a Thousand Faces

The festival aimed to introduce the general public to the full expressive richness of the harmonica, far beyond the cliché of a blues instrument. Diatonic, chromatic, tremolo, bass, or chord harmonicas were presented in numerous variants that the festival highlighted. Introductory workshops allowed novices to try their hand at the instrument, while exhibitions traced the history and making of the harmonica through the centuries.

Strong Local Roots

Beyond its musical dimension, the festival contributed to the tourism appeal of Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher and the Cher valley. The proximity of the ZooParc de Beauval, the Châteaux of the Loire, and the Touraine vineyards offered festival-goers an exceptional setting to extend their stay. The festival relied on a network of local volunteers and institutional partners (municipality, community of communes, Loir-et-Cher department, Centre-Val de Loire region).

The End of an Adventure and the Birth of Another Project

The 11th edition of Harmonicas sur Cher, in May 2017, was the last to be held in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher. No edition has taken place in 2019, 2021, 2023, or 2025 despite the historical biennial rhythm, and no public source confirms a 2026 edition. Some of the founders, including Julien Cormier and Christophe Minier, launched a new harmonica festival in 2023 in Calmont (Haute-Garonne) named "De l'Hers dans les anches", organized by the Calmont'le son association. Should the Saint-Aignan festival resume, the information would be relayed by the town hall, the Val de Cher Controis tourist office, and the association's Facebook page.
