Medieval Weekends at Culan Castle
The Festival Médiéval de Culan takes place during the last weeks of July and in August at the Château de Culan, a fortress built between the 12th and 15th centuries overlooking the Arnon valley. This exceptional castle, equipped with wooden hoardings — rare and remarkably preserved defensive elements — provides an ideal setting for medieval-themed weekends.
The medieval weekends offer a program of entertainment and historical reenactments that bring the medieval era to life. Knight combats, weapon and armor demonstrations, reenactment troop encampments, medieval craftspeople, and falconry shows allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of castles and life in the Middle Ages.
The festival emphasizes the discovery of the heritage of the Château de Culan. Guided tours allow visitors to explore the rooms, towers, and defensive hoardings with passionate guides who recount the history of the castle, its lords, and its medieval military architecture.
A dozen torchlit night tours are organized during the summer, offering a unique immersive experience. By torchlight, visitors discover the castle in a different light, in a mysterious and magical atmosphere that enhances the ancient stones.
The Château de Culan is one of the heritage jewels of the Cher department. Its wooden hoardings — defensive galleries installed at the top of the towers — are an architectural rarity, as most castles have lost these fragile elements over the centuries. Below, a medieval garden and a rose garden invite leisurely strolls and complete the visit.
