Tan Miz Du: The Flame of Breton Culture in Pays de Morlaix
Every autumn, the Pays de Morlaix ignites to the rhythm of Breton culture for the Festival Tan Miz Du. This poetic name, meaning « the fire of the dark month » in Breton, evokes both the warmth of traditional gatherings and the light that Breton culture brings to the dark season. For over twenty-five editions, the festival has become an unmissable event for all lovers of Brittany and its language.
A Long-Distance Festival Across the Territory
Unlike festivals concentrated over a few days, Tan Miz Du unfolds over six weeks, from October to the end of November, in the municipalities of Morlaix Communauté. This extended timeframe allows for the entire territory to be infused with a multitude of events: from small villages to the performance halls of Morlaix, each location becomes a hearth of Breton culture.
A Rich and Diverse Program
The festival offers a mosaic of events that reflects the diversity of contemporary Breton culture. Fest-noz, these traditional Breton balls inscribed in UNESCO's intangible heritage, form the beating heart of the festival, with dance evenings accompanied by traditional musicians and singers. The program also includes Trégor dance workshops, allowing novices to learn traditional steps, Celtic music concerts, and Irish music sessions that recall the deep links between Celtic cultures.
Theatre, Storytelling, and Literature in the Breton Language
Tan Miz Du gives pride of place to performing arts in Breton. Theatre performances in the Breton language, storytelling evenings — including invitations to Irish storytellers — documentary screenings, and Breton book fairs punctuate the program. These events testify to the vitality of a language and culture that are constantly renewed, carried by committed creators.
Passing the Flame to New Generations
Transmission is at the heart of the Tan Miz Du approach. The festival offers gatherings in the Breton language, introductory workshops for all ages, and convivial moments — such as « shared kitchen scenes » — that allow Breton speakers and the curious to come together around the language and culture. Supported by Morlaix Communauté and the Kultur Lehon Treger (KLT) service, the festival affirms that the flame of Breton culture remains alive and ready to be passed on.
