Fête de la Mer Gwin Zegal

About Fête de la Mer Gwin Zegal

The Gwin Zegal Sea Festival was a free maritime and music celebration held every summer in Plouha, Côtes-d'Armor, organized by the Amicale des plaisanciers de Gwin Zégal. The event featured a parade through the town of Plouha with boats, bagad bands, and Breton dancing, followed by a blessing of the sea, sea shanties by the Bordée de Plouha, rescue dog demonstrations with the Saint-Quay-Portrieux SNSM, a periwinkle spitting contest, a raffle, a public dance, and fireworks. Local maritime food was also served, including scallop skewers, mussels, and galettes-saucisses. The 2025 edition did not take place after the association failed to obtain municipal authorization to set up on the 100-meter coastal strip at Le Palus, and no further editions have been confirmed since.

A maritime festival in Plouha

The Gwin Zegal Sea Festival was organized by the Amicale des plaisanciers de Gwin Zégal, a boating association based in Plouha, Côtes-d'Armor. It was held by the sea at the Le Palus site, near the Gwin Zegal port—one of the last two remaining stake ports in Brittany, where boats are moored to wooden poles driven into the seabed of the cove.

Blessing of the sea and maritime traditions

The day began with a parade through the town of Plouha, featuring boats, bagad bands, and Breton dancing, followed by the blessing of the sea in the presence of sea scouts. Sea shanties performed by the Bordée de Plouha were a major highlight, keeping the coastal town's maritime heritage alive.

Entertainment, dancing, and fireworks

The program included rescue dog demonstrations with the Saint-Quay-Portrieux SNSM, a periwinkle spitting contest, Breton dance workshops, a raffle with prizes from local merchants, a public dance, and a grand fireworks display to close the event. On-site catering offered scallop skewers, mussels, and galettes-saucisses. Admission was free.
