The big music celebration in the streets of Tarbes on June 21st
The Fête de la Musique in Tarbes celebrates the summer solstice every June 21st with a free musical program taking over the streets, squares, and terraces of the city center. Created in France in 1982 by Jack Lang, this popular festival brings together between 15,000 and 20,000 people in the heart of Tarbes around multiple stages set up on Place de Verdun, Place Saint-Jean, and in front of the Town Hall. Local bands and renowned artists perform in all musical genres, from traditional Gascon music to rock, jazz, flamenco, and contemporary music.
Every June 21st, the day of the summer solstice, the capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées vibrates to the rhythm of the Fête de la Musique. Tarbes comes alive from late afternoon with dozens of free concerts spread across several outdoor stages and in the bars and restaurants of the city center. The City of Tarbes provides the stages, sound system, and lighting, allowing all bands to perform for free.
The main stages are set up on Place de Verdun, with two platforms hosting various groups, on Place Saint-Jean, and on the parvis de la Mairie (Town Hall square). The program starts at 5 PM or 6 PM and continues late into the night. Bars and restaurants also participate by hosting concerts on their terraces.
The Fête de la Musique in Tarbes offers remarkable musical diversity. You will find rock bands, jazz with students from the Conservatoire Henri Duparc, flamenco by the Centre culturel espagnol de Bigorre, urban dances, traditional Gascon music with Gascon balls, blues-rock, bandas, and many other genres. This variety reflects the cultural richness of Tarbes and the Bigorre region.
The funfair set up on Place Marcadieu completes the festive atmosphere, offering attractions and rides for families. The event brings together between 15,000 and 20,000 people in the city center of Tarbes each year.
