The Fête de la Saint-Rieul: A Centuries-Old Tradition in Senlis
The Fête de la Saint-Rieul is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Senlis. Every spring, this large funfair takes over the cours Thoré-Montmorency, a wide tree-lined avenue at the edge of the medieval town, for over two weeks of festivities and family entertainment.
Saint Rieul, Patron Saint of Senlis
Saint Rieul (Regulus in Latin) is considered the first bishop of Senlis, who evangelized the city in the 3rd century. The festival bearing his name has been celebrated for centuries in Senlis and is a highlight of local life. Over time, the religious celebrations have been enriched with a secular dimension with the installation of a funfair that has become the heart of the event.
70 Rides and Attractions
The Saint-Rieul funfair brings together around 70 rides and attractions for all ages and tastes:
- Thrill rides: Ferris wheels, roller coasters, giant slides, and thrilling attractions for adrenaline junkies
- Children's rides: carousels, miniature trains, car tracks, and skill games suitable for younger children
- Game stalls: shooting, duck fishing, ring toss, and other classic fairground games
Sweets and Food
The fair's aisles are filled with the sweet aromas of traditional confectionery:
- Golden chichis and fritters
- Crêpes and waffles
- Nougat, cotton candy, and candy apples
- Food court for on-site dining
A Spring Family Gathering
The Fête de la Saint-Rieul is a time of conviviality and sharing that brings together Senlis families and visitors from surrounding towns. The festive atmosphere, the lights of the rides, and the laughter of children create a joyful ambiance that marks the return of sunny days. The fair is open on weekdays and weekends, with extended hours on Saturday evenings.
Cours Thoré-Montmorency
The cours Thoré-Montmorency offers a vast and ideally located space to host this large-scale festival. This tree-lined promenade, on the edge of the historic center of Senlis, allows visitors to combine a visit to the funfair with a discovery of the city's rich heritage.
