Traditional Berry festival around the brandons fires in Vicq-sur-Nahon
The Fête des Brand'lons in Vicq-sur-Nahon perpetuates an ancestral tradition from Berry which consists of lighting large fires, called brandons or chalibaudes, on the first Sunday of Lent. Organized by the association Les Ateliers du Nahon, this friendly festival brings together the inhabitants around a large outdoor fire, followed by a traditional ball animated by musicians playing traditional music from Berry and Poitou. The evening is also an opportunity to taste galettes, crêpes, and hot drinks in a warm and festive atmosphere.
Each year, on the occasion of the first Sunday of Lent, the village of Vicq-sur-Nahon in Indre revives one of the oldest traditions of Berry: the brandons festival. Known locally as the Fête des Brand'lons, this celebration perpetuates an ancestral ritual linked to the transition from winter to spring, combining purifying fires and popular festivities.
The tradition of brandons dates back to the Gallic era and the worship of the god Grannus, a solar deity. In Berry, on the first Sunday of Lent, villagers lit large fires called chalibaudes or bures in the fields and at crossroads. These fires had a purifying function: it was believed they destroyed larvae and insects harmful to fruit trees, thus ensuring a good harvest. The flames gave rise to sung rounds, sarabandes, and nocturnal dances. The festival traditionally ended with a family meal where typical pastries were consumed, notably the beugnons, the traditional donuts of Berry's Mardi Gras.
Supported by the association Les Ateliers du Nahon, the Fête des Brand'lons takes place in the evening, usually starting at 7:30 PM. The program begins with the lighting of the large brandons fire outdoors (weather permitting), a key and symbolic moment of the evening. Participants gather around the flames to share a moment of conviviality.
The festival continues in the communal hall of Vicq-sur-Nahon, route de Rouvres, with a traditional ball animated by professional musicians playing traditional music from Berry and Poitou. Groups such as La Pibole, a trio of young musicians specializing in traditional repertoire, bring their energy with bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, and accordions.
Throughout the evening, participants can enjoy food and drinks on site with galettes, crêpes, and beverages offered for sale. The warm and family-friendly atmosphere makes this festival a must-attend event in local cultural life, allowing residents and visitors to discover or rediscover the living traditions of Berry.
