Fête d'la Brioche — edition 2026
46th Fête d'la Brioche — Chavagnes-en-Paillers, June 13 and 14, 2026
The 46th edition of the Fête d'la Brioche will take place on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, 2026 at the Complexe Sportif Trophée Mondial, rue Jean de Suzannet, in Chavagnes-en-Paillers (85250). Entirely free, this popular family event has been celebrating the Vendée brioche — braided, soft, flavored with orange blossom and brandy — for over four decades, in an atmosphere of a typical Vendée rural fair.
Organized by the Association Fête d'la Brioche de Chavagnes-en-Paillers with the support of the municipality, the festival gathers several thousand visitors each year who come to taste the local specialty, encourage the bakers participating in the competition, and enjoy the family entertainment spread over the two days.
A Tribute to Vendée Baking Traditions
At the heart of the event, the baking of giant brioches in a wood-fired oven provides spectacular demonstrations. The departmental competition for the best artisanal brioche and gâche rewards professional bakers from Vendée, while the homemade brioche competition opens the contest to passionate individuals. Tastings with butter and artisanal jams punctuate the two days.

The Vendéen Brioche: A Gastronomic Heritage Braided with Tradition
The Vendéen brioche is more than just a cake: it is a symbol of regional identity, a living gastronomic heritage passed down from generation to generation in the homes of the bocage. Recognizable by its characteristic braid and its soft, stringy crumb, flavored with orange blossom, vanilla, and rum, it stands out from industrial brioches by the quality of its ingredients and the patience of its production. The dough is kneaded for a long time, left to rise for several hours, hand-braided into three or four strands, egg-washed, and baked in a gentle oven to obtain that slightly caramelized crust that cracks under the tooth.
Historically, the Vendéen brioche was reserved for special occasions: Easter, weddings, baptisms, and fairs. In the bocage, the woman of the house would prepare large quantities to honor guests. Recipes varied among families and villages, each guarding its secrets: proportion of butter, rising time, chosen flavors. Even today, Vendéen bakers compete in skill, and the Vendéen brioche benefits from a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) which guarantees its territorial origin.
Chavagnes-en-Paillers, a commune in the Vendée bocage located in Montaigu-Vendée, is proud to host one of the finest celebrations of this emblematic product. The village, in the heart of the green and hedged bocage, offers an ideal rural setting to host this festival with childhood scents.
The Fête d'la Brioche: 46 Editions of Conviviality
Created over four decades ago, the Fête d'la Brioche in Chavagnes-en-Paillers is now one of the most popular gastronomic festivals in Vendée. Its 46th edition was held on June 7, 2025, at the Complexe Sportif Trophée Mondial, bringing together thousands of visitors from across the department and beyond. The event, entirely free, is organized by an association of passionate volunteers who prepare the festival months in advance.
The highlight of the show is the baking of giant brioches in wood-fired ovens. Local bakers and artisans prepare enormous doughs, braid them by hand before the amazed public, then bake them in wood-fired ovens built for the occasion. The heat of the flames, the smell of the rising dough, and the spectacle of artisanal baking create a magical atmosphere that transports visitors into a world of tradition and authenticity.
Contests, Tastings, and Entertainment
A best Vendéen brioche contest brings together amateur and professional bakers each year, who submit their creations to a jury of connoisseurs. Evaluation criteria include the braid, crust color, crumb texture, flavor balance, and overall taste. Winners are crowned with fanfare, in a warm and good-natured atmosphere. A brioche eating contest pits the most gourmand against each other in speed and quantity challenges, to the laughter and cheers of the crowd.
Tasting is, of course, at the heart of the day: slices of Vendéen brioche are distributed to visitors, accompanied by semi-salted butter and local artisanal jams. Baking workshops allow children to make their own small brioche, knead the dough, braid it, and bake it under the supervision of a baker. The children leave with their warm creations, full of pride.
The local producers' market complements the festival's gastronomic dimension: bocage honeys, artisanal jams, goat cheeses, Fiefs Vendéens wines, local sausages and charcuterie, Breton cakes, and broyés du Poitou are showcased in a festive and colorful market. Musical entertainment and children's shows punctuate the day, creating a popular fair atmosphere that delights families.
The Vendéen Brioche, Collective Pride of a Territory
The Fête d'la Brioche of Chavagnes-en-Paillers reflects a collective pride deeply rooted in the Vendée bocage. It celebrates not only an exceptional gastronomic product but also the values of artisanal know-how, intergenerational transmission, and rural conviviality that characterize Vendéen identity. By attracting thousands of visitors to a small bocage village, it contributes to the vitality of the rural territory and the tourist appeal of inland Vendée.
