The wood-fired oven bread festival of Anjouin castle
Every year at the beginning of July, the small village of Anjouin in the Indre region celebrates the art of traditional baking during its Bread Festival. In the heart of the Château du Bourg park, young and old are invited to shape and bake bread, brioches, and pastries in the castle's authentic wood-fired oven. A market of local producers, artisans, and folk and musical entertainment complete this friendly day dedicated to the bread-making heritage of Berry.
The Fête du Pain d'Anjouin is an unmissable summer event for lovers of tradition and the Berry region's terroir. Organized by the association Festiv'Anjouin, this popular festival takes place in the enchanting setting of the Château du Bourg, in the heart of this small village in the Indre, located between Valençay and Vatan.
The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the making and baking of bread in the castle's old wood-fired oven. From the morning, visitors are invited to get their hands on the dough: kneading, shaping, and baking are done under the expert advice of passionate bakers. The stone oven, carefully restored and maintained, is used to bake country bread, brioches, fouaces, and other traditional Berry pastries. Children enthusiastically participate in these workshops where ancestral know-how is passed down from generation to generation.
Around the oven, a market of local producers and artisans is set up in the castle park. Berry goat cheeses, artisanal charcuterie, Valençay wines, honeys, jams, and other local specialties are offered for tasting and sale. Artisans also exhibit their creations: pottery, basketry, wood and leather work.
The Fête du Pain is also a great popular festival with musical and folk entertainment throughout the day. Traditional groups, hurdy-gurdy players, and bagpipers liven up the village streets, while a flea market attracts bargain hunters. A rustic meal allows everyone to gather in a warm and family-friendly atmosphere, under the shade of the park's ancient trees.
The association Festiv'Anjouin has been organizing this event for many years with the help of dedicated volunteers. Its goal is to keep local heritage alive, promote the castle's historic wood-fired oven, and create a moment of sharing and conviviality for residents and visitors. The Fête du Pain thus contributes to the tourist appeal of this rural area of Berry, between Sologne and Champagne berrichonne.
