Traditional festivals inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list in Tarascon
The Fetes de la Tarasque are the major traditional festivals of Tarascon, inscribed since 2005 on the oral and intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Every year at the end of June, the Tarasque — a legendary creature, half-dragon, half-turtle, tamed by Saint Martha — parades through the town's streets accompanied by nearly 800 people in medieval costume. Historical reenactments, knight combats, Camargue races, concerts, a fair, and a giant aioli liven up four days of festivities blending Provençal tradition and popular fervor, at the foot of the majestic castle of King René.
According to legend, the Tarasque was a monstrous creature — half-dragon, half-turtle — that terrorized the inhabitants of Tarascon and the Rhône valley. Saint Martha, who landed in Provence with the Saintes Maries, is said to have tamed the beast through the sole power of her prayer. Since the 15th century, the people of Tarascon have celebrated this founding event every year with grand festivals, where an effigy of the Tarasque parades through the town's streets, carried and animated by dozens of volunteers.
In 2005, the Fetes de la Tarasque were inscribed on the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity list by UNESCO, recognizing the age, richness, and vitality of this living tradition. This inscription has enhanced the festival's international aura and contributes to its preservation, while encouraging the town of Tarascon to maintain the authenticity and transmission of its traditions.
The highlight of the festival is the Grand Procession of the Tarasque, which brings together nearly 800 people in medieval costume parading behind the roaring Tarasque through the streets of Tarascon. Historical reenactments at the castle of King René — knight combats, castle sieges, medieval artisan workshops (blacksmith, tanner, calligrapher, goldsmith) — immerse visitors in the atmosphere of Provençal Middle Ages. The arrival of Tartarin, the famous character by Alphonse Daudet, by the Rhône adds a literary and humorous touch to the festival.
The Fetes de la Tarasque are not limited to medieval heritage: Camargue races in the arenas, abrivados and encierros in the streets, free concerts in the squares, and the bodega village with its musical entertainment liven up four days of festivities. The giant aioli, a traditional Provençal outdoor meal, brings together locals and visitors in a convivial moment of sharing. A fair and family activities complete the program of this festival that unites all generations around the legend of the Tarasque.
