The Fêtes de Labrit: Festive Tradition in the Land of Albret

Located in the heart of Haute Lande, the town of Labrit is a place steeped in history. Former capital of the powerful seigneurie d'Albret, which gave France King Henry IV, this village of about 800 inhabitants perpetuates its local festivals every summer with the fervor and conviviality characteristic of Landes communes. For four to five days in August, Labrit comes alive to the rhythm of bandas, Landes races, and popular dances.

The Float Parade, an Iconic Moment

The cavalcade is one of the most spectacular moments of the Fêtes de Labrit. A parade of decorated floats, prepared for weeks by the inhabitants of neighboring villages, crosses the town in a festive and colorful atmosphere. Each float, designed around a theme, is accompanied by costumed participants and bandas playing as they march. This procession, which starts from the surrounding villages to converge on Labrit, is a local tradition that mobilizes dozens of volunteers and attracts a large audience.

Landes Races in the Arena

The Landes races are a highlight of the Fêtes de Labrit. In the village arena, the 'écarteurs' and 'sauteurs' (bullfighters and jumpers) challenge the fighting cows in a ballet of bravery and elegance. These formal races, accompanied by bandas, are an unmissable spectacle of Landes taurine culture and attract aficionados from all over the region.

Festive Meals and Landes Gastronomy

Country meals punctuate each day of the festival. The Friday evening dinner-concert kicks off the gastronomic festivities with an open-air meal accompanied by an orchestra. Local associations then offer various meals throughout the weekend: grills, duck confit, garbure, mussels and fries, and local specialties. The 'estanquet', a refreshment stand set up in the square, is the meeting point for festival-goers at all hours.

Bandas and Popular Dances

Bandas are omnipresent during the Fêtes de Labrit. These brass bands roam the streets, enlivening every moment of the day with their festive and catchy music. The evenings continue with popular dances and concerts in the village square, making festival-goers dance until the early morning. The music stage, set up for the occasion, hosts local bands and DJs who ensure the nocturnal atmosphere.

Sports and Family Activities

The Fêtes de Labrit offer a range of sports activities with open pétanque competitions, foot races through the village streets, and traditional games. Children's activities, with inflatable games, workshops, and shows, make these festivals a family event where every generation finds its place.

A Historic Village Celebrates

The Fêtes de Labrit are an opportunity to rediscover a village with remarkable historical heritage. The remains of the Château d'Albret, the medieval ramparts, and the Romanesque church bear witness to a glorious past. The festival committee, supported by the municipality and volunteers, keeps these festive traditions alive, strengthening social bonds and the village's identity in the heart of the Landes forest.
