The Fêtes de Pomarez: at the heart of the Mecca of Course Landaise

Pomarez, a village of 1,500 inhabitants located in Chalosse Landaise between Dax and Orthez, is universally recognized as the "Mecca of Course Landaise". This prestigious title is well-deserved: the village has lived for and by Course Landaise for generations, and its arena is the stage for the season's greatest taurine competitions. Every second weekend in August, the patron saint festivals transform Pomarez into the national capital of this art, inscribed in France's intangible cultural heritage.

The Covered Arena: a historic monument of Course Landaise

The covered arena of Pomarez, built in 1932, is the village's most iconic monument. With a capacity of over 3,000 spectators, this arena with its distinctive roof offers unique comfort for watching Course Landaise in all weather. The amphitheater's architecture, with its wooden stands and tiled roof, bears witness to nearly a century of taurine passion. The bullpens, service corridors, and fine sand arena create the perfect setting for top-level Course Landaise.

Exceptional Course Landaise

The Course Landaise of Pomarez are among the most prestigious of the season. During the festivals, the arena hosts competitive races counting towards the Challenge Landes Béarn, bringing together the best evasors and jumpers against cows from the most renowned breeding farms: Armagnacaise, Dargelos, Dal, and Deyris. The "Art et Courage" event, featuring exceptionally intense rope-less races, has become a must-see for aficionados. The passion of the Pomarez public, knowledgeable and demanding, contributes to the electric atmosphere in the arena.

The "Queens of the Arena" Exhibition

During the festivals, the arena hosts the "Queens of the Arena" exhibition, which pays tribute to the women of Course Landaise: female evasors, jumpers, and all those who contribute to keeping this tradition alive. This exhibition highlights a often-overlooked aspect of Course Landaise and demonstrates the art's openness to women for several decades.

Encierros, Bandas, and Festive Atmosphere

The Fêtes de Pomarez are not limited to the arena. The encierros in the village streets offer moments of collective adrenaline, while the bandas liven up the squares and streets with their rousing brass and percussion. The peñas open their bars to welcome festival-goers with tapas and cold drinks. The atmosphere of the Fêtes de Pomarez is renowned for its human warmth and infectious passion.

Gastronomy and Conviviality

Food is available throughout the festivals with rustic meals under marquees, outdoor grills, and Chalosse specialties. Chalosse beef, foie gras, grilled duck breast, and pastis landais are served generously. Evenings continue with popular dances and concerts, while the bodegas remain open until the early morning in a continuous festive atmosphere.
