The great festival of wines and flavors of Migé, in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards of Coulanges-la-Vineuse
Every end of April, the wine village of Migé (89580) comes alive around the Foire de Bacchus, its popular event dedicated to the wines of the Bourgogne Coulanges-la-Vineuse appellation, to the products of the Auxerrois region, and to local artisans. On the Place de la Mairie, winemakers, producers, and visitors gather in a friendly atmosphere to celebrate the Pinot Noir red wines and Chardonnay white wines of this confidential terroir in the Yonne.
In the small village of Migé (89580), nestled in the natural region of Forterre, on the borders of Puisaye-Forterre and Auxerrois, the Foire de Bacchus is one of those authentic rural events that keep alive the links between a village and its vines. Organized every end of April on the Place de la Mairie, it brings together wine lovers, local producers, and curious visitors in a country fair atmosphere where wine flows and the flavors of Burgundy take center stage.
Migé is a tiny commune — barely four hundred souls — but with a well-established wine identity. It is one of the seven communes of the Bourgogne Coulanges-la-Vineuse appellation, a geographical designation recognized by decree since 1993, which extends over some 170 hectares of vines south of Auxerre, on clay-limestone slopes exposed to the Burgundy sun. The village of Migé is home to the Domaine Houblin-Vernin (formerly Domaine Jean-Luc Houblin), one of the witnesses to this winemaking tradition passed down through the family for several decades.
The history of vines in the Coulanges-la-Vineuse region — of which Migé is one of the cradles — dates back to antiquity. The Romans planted the first vines in this area as early as the 2nd century, and the Carolingian era saw the multiplication of ecclesiastical wine-growing establishments that made the vineyard prosper until the heart of the Middle Ages. At its peak, in the 18th century, Coulanges-la-Vineuse had no fewer than two hundred and forty-three winegrowers, and its wines traveled up the Yonne River to Parisian tables. The phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century almost wiped out this tradition; it was the tenacity of a few winegrowing families that allowed its resurrection, leading to the official recognition of the appellation in 1993.
The wines produced on the terroir of Migé and neighboring communes (Coulanges-la-Vineuse, Charentenay, Jussy, Mouffy, Val-de-Mercy, Escolives-Sainte-Camille) are distinguished by a fruity, accessible profile and remarkable value for money. Production is dominated by more than 80% Pinot Noir, which yields elegant reds with aromas of cherry, strawberry, blackcurrant, and blackberry, with subtle minerality and characteristic roundness. White wines, made from Chardonnay and representing about 13% of production, are characterized by floral notes (white flowers, acacia), hints of peach and citrus, and aromatic freshness. These wines, generally consumed within two to seven years of harvest, are the expression of a confidential Burgundy, a world away from world-renowned appellations but carrying their own identity and undeniable charm.
The Foire de Bacchus takes its name from the Roman god of wine and festivity — a reference that summarizes the spirit of the event: joyful, popular, and resolutely tinged with gustatory pleasures. On the Place de la Mairie of Migé, winemakers from Auxerrois and Coulanges-la-Vineuse set up their stands to offer tastings and direct sales of their appellation wines Bourgogne Coulanges-la-Vineuse. It is a rare opportunity to meet the producers directly, ask questions about vintages, winemaking methods, and terroirs, and take home bottles that are impossible to find in supermarkets.
Around the wines, the fair is enriched by stands of local products from the Yonne: regional cheeses (Époisses, Soumaintrain, goat cheeses from Puisaye), artisanal charcuterie, jams, honeys, sourdough bread, garden vegetables, and other delicacies from the Auxerrois region. Local artisans complete the picture, adding to the fair the dimension of a true rural market where it is pleasant to stroll, taste, and linger in conversation.
The atmosphere is that of village fairs as they used to be: human-sized, without overwhelming crowds, with care for hospitality and the quiet pride of sharing the best that local land and hands can produce. For visitors new to the village, the Foire de Bacchus is an ideal gateway to this confidential Burgundy vineyard and to the discreet charm of the Forterre.
The village of Migé is worth a visit in itself. Located between Auxerre and Puisaye, in the natural region of Forterre, it covers an area of nearly fifteen square kilometers dotted with hedgerows, forests, and a few parcels of vines. The Moulin de Migé, one of the village's flagship monuments, hosts regional product markets, visits, exhibitions, and cultural events throughout the year — all opportunities to discover the soul of the region. The commune is part of the Communauté de communes de Puisaye-Forterre, a territory of 57 communes and over 35,000 inhabitants, which has made rural heritage and local products two strong pillars of its tourism development.
The proximity of Auxerre (about twenty kilometers to the north) allows for combining a visit to the Foire de Bacchus with an exploration of the capital of the Yonne — Saint-Étienne Cathedral, Saint-Germain Abbey, old town — or enjoying the nearby vineyards of Irancy and Chablis for a complete wine tourism day in the heart of Lower Burgundy.
In the Burgundy festive landscape dominated by the great appellations of the Côte-d'Or, the Foire de Bacchus in Migé represents something irreplaceable: the vitality of a local tradition, the direct link between a village and its vines, the shared pride of a terroir too long ignored. Coming to the Foire de Bacchus means choosing wine with history, the handshake of the winemaker who knows each vine by name, and the pleasure of a bottle bought in the village square a few steps from the town hall.
