About Icaun of Punk

Organized by the PYHC (Pont sur Yonne Hardcore) association, Icaun of Punk is a punk, ska, and hardcore music festival held every autumn at the Salle Polyvalente in Pont-sur-Yonne. Its name pays homage to Icauna, the Gallo-Roman name for the Yonne river. Local beer, food trucks, vendors, and tattoo artists complete this day of concerts in an underground and friendly atmosphere.

Icaun of Punk: Punk Roars on the Banks of the Yonne

In the small town of Pont-sur-Yonne, at the confluence of the Yonne and Voulzie rivers, an association of enthusiasts has been cultivating the flame of extreme music for over ten years. PYHC — Pont sur Yonne Hardcore — founded in March 2010, has become a pillar of the punk and hardcore scene in the Yonne department. Among the events it organizes, Icaun of Punk has established itself as the unmissable autumn gathering for punk, ska, and hardcore fans in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and beyond.

The festival's name is itself a mischievous nod to local history: Icauna is the Gallo-Roman name for the goddess of the Yonne river, whose course borders the town. By associating this ancient name with punk culture, the organizers assert a strong territorial connection, an acknowledged local pride that contrasts with the often nomadic and urban image of underground scenes.

An Eclectic Program in the Great Punk Family

Icaun of Punk is not confined to a single subgenre. Over the years, the Salle Polyvalente on Rue Pierre Banry has vibrated to the rhythm of very diverse bands. In 2023, the festival featured groups such as Toxic Waste, Les Prouters, Rise Up, Police On TV, and UltraBernard, offering a panorama of contemporary French punk rock. The 2024 edition broadened the spectrum further, hosting Gasteropodes Killers (thirty years of punk experience), No Rep. and its screaming youth, the energetic ska-punk of Turn Off, Parisian punk from We Hungry, and the raw anarcho-punk of Psycho Squatt.

This stylistic diversity is a trademark of the festival: it features the old guard and the new generation, established bands and emerging groups, in a spirit of transmission inherent to punk culture. Each edition is an opportunity to discover bands rarely seen outside major cities, making Pont-sur-Yonne an unexpected but very real rallying point for the French-speaking alternative scene.

A DIY and Solidarity Spirit

True to the founding values of the punk movement, Icaun of Punk cultivates a pronounced DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit. The organization relies entirely on the volunteer work of PYHC association members, who prepare and run the event with infectious energy. Ticket prices remain deliberately affordable — around ten euros — so that culture is not reserved only for those who can afford it.

The festival also has a solidarity dimension: the 2023 edition supported the animal shelter Pas si bête in Cutrelles (Seine-et-Marne), with a donation drive and the presence of the association Hardcore Cares France, dedicated to animal welfare in the hardcore scene. This sensitivity to social and environmental causes is characteristic of a punk scene that has never renounced its commitment.

A Celebration Beyond the Concerts

Icaun of Punk is not just a series of concerts. From the opening of the doors in the early evening, the site comes alive with a bar serving local beer, a food truck, vendor stalls offering records, fanzines, clothing, and merchandise, and tattoo artists perpetuating a tradition inseparable from punk culture. The atmosphere is one of conviviality and exchange, between long-time regulars and newcomers attracted by the festival's growing reputation.

The Salle Polyvalente in Pont-sur-Yonne provides an ideal setting: large enough to comfortably accommodate the audience, yet intimate enough to maintain the close connection between artists and spectators that makes small festivals so magical. It is in these human-sized venues, far from commercial giants, that punk still finds its most authentic meaning.

PYHC, Guardian of the Icaunaise Underground Scene

Behind Icaun of Punk lies primarily the story of the PYHC association, registered on March 11, 2010, at the sub-prefecture of Sens. Since its creation, PYHC has organized dozens of concerts and several editions of PYHC Fest, its other flagship event dedicated to metal and hardcore, traditionally held in the spring. Icaun of Punk, a predominantly punk and ska festival, complements this calendar by offering an autumn event more focused on punk rock in its broadest sense.

Thanks to PYHC, the town of Pont-sur-Yonne, a modest community of a few thousand inhabitants, has earned a reputation far exceeding its size in the world of French underground music. Festival-goers come from all over the Yonne department, from the neighboring Île-de-France region (Paris and Orléans are only 1h30 away), from Troyes, and from Auxerre, to join this passionate community on the banks of the Icauna river.
