The great gastronomic fair of Brie, an unmissable event for cheese and wine lovers
The International Cheese and Wine Fair of Coulommiers is one of the largest gastronomic events in Seine-et-Marne and Île-de-France. Founded in 1968 by Pierre Aubert to celebrate the millennium of Brie cheese, this fair brings together more than 200 exhibitors each year in March - cheesemakers, winegrowers, charcutiers, local producers - and attracts up to 75,000 visitors over four days at the Foirail de la Sucrerie in Coulommiers. Professional competitions for Brie de Coulommiers and wines, livestock exhibitions, an educational mini-farm, and tastings make this event a major hub for French gastronomy and a tribute to the cheese heritage of Brie.
The history of the Coulommiers Cheese and Wine Fair dates back to 1967, when Pierre Aubert, president of the Union of Traders and the Committee of Trade Fairs and Exhibitions of Coulommiers, had the idea to celebrate the millennium of Brie cheese. On May 7, 1967, a modest first event was held at the municipal theater, bringing together four cheese and wine exhibitors as well as the Confrérie du Beaujolais.
The success was immediate. In 1968, the first official edition of the Cheese and Wine Fair took place on Place du Théâtre and the Town Hall, hosting seven exhibitors. Year after year, the event grew, attracting an increasing number of producers and visitors.
In 1989, the Fair moved to the Foirail de la Sucrerie, a vast site that could accommodate up to 200 exhibitors. This relocation marked a turning point in the event's history, transforming it from a local fair to a gastronomic gathering of national importance.
The Sucrerie site, with its indoor and outdoor spaces, allows for a complete visitor experience: cheese halls, wine aisles, local producer village, dining area, livestock exhibition zone, and fairground rides. All in a festive and gourmet atmosphere that has made the event famous.
The Coulommiers Fair is, above all, a leading professional event. Several competitions take place throughout the four days:
Beyond the competitions, the Fair offers a varied program for all ages:
With over 80% artisans and producers among the 200 exhibitors, the Coulommiers Fair remains true to its original mission: celebrating the authenticity and know-how of French terroirs.
